Changed the original plastic GT pump at ~20k miles 9 years old with a metal one. Just removed that one (5 years and 25K more miles) and now have a plastic one again.
Track car w/ metal pump has two years on it (several races on lots of DE's).

If you change the pump w/ the T-belt change (5 years and/or 50K miles) it really shouldn't matter which one unless there is a manfacturing defect.

As always...YMMV

When was the plastic impeller introduced with car production - '90? Curious, as the one removed from the '88 was plastic - if plastic was introduced later, it had found its way in as a replacement.
BTW, the ugly failure of that pump was 'one of the rare ones' - the seal was still intact!
My local machine shop offered to press in a new seal & bearing - if I could find out what seal it took: rebuilding isn't likely to be rocket science, but the component sizes must be known, which I don't.
MBMB - interested in your results if you proceed.
