How do RMBs compare?

Interesting question
Mark asks an interesting question, or is it just timing? I.e., I'm coming to need more. And Drew may have described what I want. I don't want to wake the neighbors, scare smalll children or draw the attention of the bears at idle, but a little more growl would be nice when there aren't neighbors or small children around.
Drew, are you saying, when you get into the right pedal, it growls?

This is the kind of sound you'll get with a RMB from 928 International.

What are the differences between the twin pipe RMB from 928 Intl and from 928 Specialist?
Has anyone tried the single 5.5" oval from 928 Specialist?
Mark and DR...are you guys planning on running any specials soon on RMBs?

Hello Mark,
Installing the 928 Intl RMB took 30 min for me. That doesn't count running to get 4 new sets of SS nuts and bolts. Both the bolts on my clamps were shot. I also found it easier to take off the left rear wheel and splash shield to get access to the hangers.
Once I started up the car it defiantly resonated with a more powerful growl, even at idle, but no louder. When the engine is throttled up, the RMB does sound louder, but not over-powering.
At normal road speed I personally liked the improved sound (deep, throaty) and did not find it louder. I'm not fond of really lowed exhaust.
When I got to the highway I was not able to rip up the on-ramp, but once I was in a clear lane, I opened up. At high speed and high rev it sounded like a funny car! Everyone within earshot knew I was making over 300hp.
Cool

A good way to think about the sound is to compare it to a subwoofer. Not necessarily much louder, but kinda like a lower frequency that travels further.
Installing an RMB will make your car more noticeable from a sound standpoint, but not much louder.....until you really get on it.....that's a whole different story.
If the neighbors wake up when you rumble by, it'll be from the loose panes in their windows vibrating, not from the decibels.
I find loud, raspy exhausts offensive......RMB's aren't.

The 928 International RMB uses two three inch pipes for the rear section which does help make a deep resonating sound . The metal hangers are flat metal straps with more than one adjustment hole . The flares for the clamps to the exhaust pipes are carefully sized . There are a limited number of welds with the pipes bent to shape . Our black finished pipes are now all powder coated . And no we do not plan on any special prices , we have sold more than I can remember at our normal prices . They are made to our specifications by a local muffler shop who does a very good job of fabrication ......... we many years ago purchased them from the same supplier that 928 specialists is using but shipping costs and shipping damage (how do you ship 10 or 20 safely ? ) along with our interest in the different hangers prompted us to find a local supplier to build to our specifications using a jig to standardize the dimensions . The RMB is the best money you can spend on a 928 to improve your driving pleasure and get some respect !! I would rank them 928 international #1 , 928 Specialists #2 , DEVEK ......... too many welds , too small pipes , looks more stock ..... But anyone of them is better than the big stock final muffler !! We nearly always have them in stock ready to ship the same day .

I would echo this sentiment. I have the 928 Specialists RMB. The hangers are SS rod, and use the stock hangers and rubber fro the OEM set up. I (the truth here) installed mine in about 10 minutes in my business suit (too excited to wait till I got changed). 'Course my original hardware was all in tact and it only took a squirt of WD40 to get the fasteners undone.
In terms of sound, the idle is like playing Barry white in the background.....rich, melodious, bespeaking a beast under the hood. It is not loud......Up untill around 3000 rpm, when you have your foot into it. Then it says "Step aside boys, the Big Dog is off the porch".
At highway speeds it sounds just fine, not loud at all. I have taken to riding with the window down when ever the weather permits, due solely to the beautiful music the RMB makes when you even threaten to put your foot into it....
I have the two pipe SS version, I really like it and highly recommend it. At last years inspection the guy put the car on a lift for the first time ever, I am sure it was to look for some modified exhaust system. What he saw looked "stock" to him and he remarked that it had held up well for being 15 years old.
An RMB is the best money you can spend on a 928, and you can put it back to stock in as little as 15 minutes.
I do wonder what it will sound like when Gretch finishes her transformation to a Murf SuperShark........"Step aside boys"..............

Convincing arguments - so I'm becomming a believer in the RMB: I had replaced the single oval muffler on an '88 with the twin pipe GT oem version. This was a definite improvement, but still too tame for those warm summer afternoons, windows down, back roads......
Watercooler, your RMB in Stainless Steel looks great.
Jim, other than a small price differential, are there any pro/con points to consider between the coated carbon steel and SS units (OK corrosion resistance )?
