Stainless is pretty much stainless....... the powder painted resists corrosion pretty well (better than painted) It really is personal preference for LOOKS . I personally think flat black is more in character for a car with ZERO chrome bits (except for 78 door locks and 7 inch headlight trim rings ) .

I am running a 928 Specialists RMB on my 89 s4...and I love it, love it, love it! The PO, Gary T (Atlanta) installed it a couple of years ago. I do not have a recording of the exhaust note but I can tell you that several folks have followed me into gas stations to ask me about the engine in the car, what kind of Porsche it is, how old, etc. FWIW, at highway speeds, the exhaust note of my car is quite tame in the cabin...not at all harsh / loud. However, at idle and around town it sounds a little mean... ...but understated.
I agree that the RMB is one of the BEST mods one can do...adds significantly to the overall driving experience.
Best,
Tim

For a change I didn't buy something from 928 Intl and bought my RMB from 928 specialists... I don't think thiers purrs likes a kitten at idol... it has a pretty deep grumble at idol and roars at speed... 5 min after I had it on a guy comes racing up behind me in a Chevy truck and asks me is that a Chevy V-8 in there... LOL... I was insulted but let him know that it was a stock Porsche V-8... he looked confused but said that was the best "one of those hed seen...
Long story short my RMB was noticible at idol and at full bore.

CMW,
I agree with you when you said that your 928 Specialist's RMB was "...RMB was noticible at idol and at full bore." Also, similar to your story about the pick-up truck guy who followed you...I had a Jeep CJ-7 guy ask me if I had a Chevy LT-1 in mine. I politely told him it was the original PORSCHE engine...received a similar response to you. Nice fellow...nice Jeep too.
Jim H.,
Did the '89 s4 A/T models receive the larger exhaust plumbing or only the GTs?
Best,
Tim

The GT and all 1990 - 1991 as I recall run smaller resonators dual under the car BUT the pipe diameters are the same ....... One GTS owner perhaps best described it as " It no longer sounds like the whoosh mobile " .

You guys always seem to have everything in stock, and to make matters worse, have the nerve to ship it out the very same day! Just what kind of business are you guys running over there, anyway?
I sure do appreciate the prompt, friendly service from you guys.

I have the 928 specialists 5.5 oval - on my 85S it took some mods to fit, the integrated muffler hangs lower than I'd like, but most of the time it's fine (just watch out for speed bumps if your shark is lowered)... the sound is a noticible rumble at idle, and becomes a roar under WFO over 4500rpm...I wouldn't run it w/out cats, seemed to help bottom end torque a bit and it seems to rev a bit easier, but w/out a dyno to confirm - my ***-o-meter is all I had to go on...

I have a Dave and Jeannie RMB on my SE.
The SE exhaust is different to stock S4 in that the first box is straight thru' then two resonators then the original rear muffler also straight thru'. No cats.
The RMB took away the resonant rumble at tickover making it a loud burble like a big murican V8, but above about 3000 rpm it howls.

Rob your 85 has a very small single resonator two in two out and would be louder than the later cars as a result . With no cat you would have NO MUFFLER and it would be very loud .....like 1/4 mile dirt oval Saturday night .

IMHO, adding an RMB is the best "grin per dollar" mod you can do to your shark. It's cheap, increases the sound level "just enough" to make you and everyone else realize that there is power under that hood (and it ain't a flat 6 either baby!!!!!!) and is ridiculously easy to install, even if you don't do your own maintenance. To me it ranks right up there with the t-belt and water pump as the first maintenance items to do on a newly purchased shark.

I bought a RMB for the '86.5 but since the '86 still has the older set up I'm going to go with the Ott test pipe. After having listened to Big Daves sound clip of his '85 at WOT I descided I NEEDED one of those. Might be the right alternative to a RMB for some of the earlier cars.

I want to thank everybody, especially Jim of 928 International, for taking the time and effort to respond to my original query and the other questions here.
When I had belts to order last Tuesday after 4:00 Houston time, the only one of the Big 3 I could reach (after business hours on the east coast) was 928 intl. I had my parts by Friday.
