Default Bumpy and Warped Dashboard

Hey All... I am headlong into my 928 summer projects and really intend to spend as much time and energy as I can working on this, and that.

86 S3

Mostly, I am pleased with the condition of the material generally covering my dash. Considering it's 30+ yrs old and stuff... There are a couple of cracks in the pod. I will look at that down the line but it's not making me crazy just yet. What is tho,,,

It seems that the material used under the leather or vinyl that covers the dash must be some kind of particle board type of material. It's bumped, puckered, raised swollen and out of shape in some pretty annoying points. The left and right windshield defrost vents (it pops one out of its clip in holding spots), the area around the central vent, glove box etc. I notice that there is this vinyl on vinyl chirping here and there when I drive (where door molding meets the dash) due to swelling and misshape of the material underneath. I'd imagine it's all due to absorption of water, wetting and drying over the years.

Any solutions to this problem that folks have discovered? Shaving it down?

Thanks LOTS in advance.

It sounds like you might have one of the cheap vinyl overlay covers on top of the original dash.

Here is mine before & after. You can see the vinyl "waves" in the first picture at the defrost vents. Had I know what a horrific mess it would be after removing the cover, I would have left it on until I was ready to install a new cover from Classic 9 Leather.

Damn dude... That is pretty rough!
I could be wrong,,, goodness knows I often am, lol, but I don't think that that is what's going on. But again, I could be wrong.

I'll be double checking... Thank you.
A replacement and worthwhile leather replacement is a long long way off
