Default Exhaust Hanger Alternatives

On a road trip, lost all three exhaust hangers. Patched it up with twisted coat hangers to get back home.

Would like to perform a more permanent repair tomorrow because I leave Thursday for SITM. Because of my short timeline, I'd like to repair with some locally sourced rubber hanger alternatives....

Do those exist?

From memory, looking around in your neighborhood parts store I recall a number of universal donuts and rubber hangers that would work in a pinch.
At least long enough to keep the muffler from falling off!

The main reason our cars lose those on a frequent basis is the holder on the torque tube is missing so all the stress is put on the back 4. If you don't have one that comes through the front portion of the rear heat shields, get a hold of Roger or Mark and get one.

Thanks, Sean. We found 3 broken ones, while I am 150 miles from home with the wife and was lucky to find someone with a lift on a Sunday.

I may need to do some temporary repairs to stay on road for SITM but will definitely explore correcting all hangers between SITM and the Atlanta event.

Do the S4's even have a front one? Never seen one. I ordered 4 new ones and realized that I have the 4 original ones.... lol

Yes. If originally equipped with the large resonators. Small resonator 928s did NOT have it.

Mine was a 90 model S4 but had the small resonators. That explains why I have no idea what they look like.

I replace the rear 4 hangers on every car I go through, after having a set fail on one of my cars .
I used a coat hanger to secure the pipes till I got home, all 4 rubbers failed at the same time,
my car didnt have the center hanger from new

Thanks for the advice, everyone. I looked up the mount behind the heat shield, @SeanR mentioned, online and believe I see it in the below picture as #s 6, 7, 9, 10 and 11....

I think my 1988 has the smaller resonators but nonetheless, i will be looking to source those extra parts used from 928intl plus 4 new hangers.

As a purely temporary measure, to get me through SITM and back, I've gone with some hangers from AutoZone that fit plus some twisted safety wire as a backup. Not wanting to say anything definitive about the AutoZone hangers but if they work over the 1,000+ miles of driving to/from SITM, I'll share a bit more info.

Safe Travels!

Trey, if I understand you correctly, your Black Witch DOES have part #’s 6-11, or are you saying you understand them from the drawing?

If your shark does have part #’s 6 and 7 installed, I can bring good used pieces 9-11 and a new 8A to SITM and install them there.
#6 needs the torque tube dropped to install, if I remember correctly from my work.

Let me know what you want to do!

Thank you for the offer, Seth. I would need ALL of those parts listed, as my car doesn't have the hanger at that location.

I'm very comfortable the temporary hangers will get me through the trip to SITM and home. I hope to not have to drop the torque tube when I do get the parts.

I would love a picture of the hanger in situation so I can understand placement, etc...

Anyone have pictures of this exhaust hanger bracket (to the right of the scale) under the car?

I didn't see it in Dwayne's write up here...
