Fuel Tank bracket repair
#16
I was at Brooklands last Sunday, as it happens, as it's not far away. A rare trip out for my 928 as normally it's in pieces but I had to put it back together to get an MoT the day before.

I'm on the southern side of Sutton near Carshalton Beeches. Strictly speaking it's a London borough but we like to think of ourselves as being in Surrey.

77 to 79 tanks did not have these top brackets at all... and I've never seen one fall out.

Ok so heres what I did in the end.
- cut a bracket out of 2mm steel roughly to shape
- Heated it with a blowtorch and let it sink into the the original plastic "mounting block" (be careful not to let it sink too deep)
- riveted the new bracket to the remains of the old bracket.
- Filled the gaps between the bracket and the plastic block with JB weld.
Once the JB weld sets I'll paint and seal everything. As the old bracket was aluminium and the new one is steel this is especially important. As Drooman above says it doesnt carry the weight of the tank- The cradle straps do.

Looks like you’re making some good progress there.
I’m 3.5 years into my 3 month restoration and most stuff works now. Mine isn’t going as deep as yours but I am going to have to take the transmission out at some point to address the leaks so I may have to pop over your way sometime to compare notes.

At least you have a pit to work with- Not fun working on a sloping drive! Transmission and rear suspension now rebuilt and back on the car (last week) which is why Ive moved on to the fuel tank. Cradle completely rotten and Id rather not shell out £350+ for what is basically some metal straps so looking at fabricating a new one with some steel banding and using the old cradle cover as a plug to make a fibreglass one.
