Default 928 GT Speaker replacement

Trying to keep factory amp and head unit. Can anyone tell me if there are decent speakers that work without modification?

I only want to replace speakers because factory ones are toast.

Many thanks in advance for any and all help

not sure what is wrong with your speakers, but I was able to re-cone mine and all good.

The large speakers in the back (Bass) I believe are 2 ohm. The others are 4 ohm. You can repair the speaker foams, very easy and the speakers sound very good after.

I've done both the 4" in front and 6" bass in the back on my GT.

Voskian, I believe I recognize your car from a Frenzy. Am I correct?

Also, is re-coning and repairing the foam the same thing?

Sorry for dumb Q

I think so, the cone (paper) is supported around the edge by a foam membrane allowing the cone to move/vibrate. The foam dries out and crumbles. You can order new foam and replace.

yes I go to Frenzy most every year ( last year I came with my Audi TT). GT was “sick” last year..

Old foam surround

Remove and clean

Reglue new foam

I bought the foam surround fir the 6” bass speakers from these guys.

Re-cone or re-foam?

I would really like to replace the cone and the foam. I found a kit years ago but now none of my googling finds what I need.

I remember you. Hey, thanks so much for the info, guys!

Are we sure it'll sound as good as new MB's? I'd much rather use the originals

And yes, I haven't taken out the speakers yet so I don't know if I need foam or both cones and foam?

I guess it's time to start taking them out

re-cone, re-foam, surrounds....all the same to me

Audiofriends in the Netherlands was the only place I could find the correct size surrounds for my 1990. they are blaupunkt specific.
here is their link:

Surrounds came with glue and brushes. Online instructions made it go smooth. less than $50. for all including shipping. international post took a bit long (12 days); no big deal.
patience is the main thing...speakers now sound great!

If you don't want to do it yourself, try CK Speaker Repair in Canoga Park, Ca. They can be found on Yelp. They did a great job with mine and much less than I figured for all 8 speakers. They sound just like 1985, audio patina I suppose. Owner is Chris, nice guy, a VW guy who loves Porsche's too.

On my gts I overhauled my amp with about 50 new condensers, I changed woofers with 2 jbl gx602, that can work with 2,3 ohm impedance, and changed mids with 4 phonocar 66121 100mm speakers. Those 6 new speakers can be handled by original Amp and improve sound, you can still hear the lacking of bass sound but there is some bass sound now... Used old speaker sorrounds to put new in a stealthy way ,a lot of threads about it. Now I have a decent sound, not the best ever, but when I turn on radio I have not big disappointment.

This is where I got my foam kits:

Springfield Speaker Repair

If you go with aftermarket speakers but still want the stock look, you'll have to cut the mounting rings off the original speakers so that you can use the original grills - thereby destroying the original speakers.

Original speakers are becoming a bit hard to come by these days, so I would not recommend doing that unless you have a spare set for safekeeping.
