Default Different part number(s) S4 intake manifold

I have a bought a used S4 intake manifold.
When cleaning the manifold the part number 928 110 546 2R appears. This part number is not mentioned in the PET (at least I cannot find it).

According to the PET the part number should be 928 110 228 02 (for S4/GT and als0 GTS).

Who can explain about the differences between the intake manifolds having these numbers?

My spare intake manifold has the same 928 110 546 2R MB part number, and it came off my spare 89 engine. They may have changed the number on some later models, the manifolds are the same as far as I know for fitment.

Thst's a casting number, that can be used for reference. All the early manifolds are "2R". Late versions are "4R". The 4R manifolds have some changes right at the intake flange.

Early S4's (up to '89 I think) had the 2R. I am assuming that since the part number is the same that they both will work. The differences are pretty minor. Greg knows a lot more than me but I read somewhere the 4R was opened up inside to meet the higher performance requirements of the GT engine. Might be an urban legend. But for sure 4Rs are pretty rare, 2Rs are usually available.

Hi folks, thank you for your replies on this matter!

Reading your replies, is it plausible that GTS models have an intake manifold conform to a 4R spec?

Anyway, interesting background information that one cannot find by simply consulting the PET, because in there the same part numbers are mentioned for S4/GT/GTS.

I'm pretty sure that all GTSs world-wide would have had 4R intakes.

IIRC the original manifold (2R) was 928 110 228 00 and it superseded to the 928 110 228 02 (4R)
