Upgrading engine mounts on OB
As summer is approaching, Im getting ready to come back statside and start playing with the toys.
On my todo list are engine mounts for my 1979. Following some threads here, I came across a post that stated that if I wanted to upgrade to Roger’s Volvo style mounts that I would have to replace the subframe.
Another thread said that the early mounts are holding up fine, and usually dont need to be replaced.
On my Benz S600, the liquid filled mounts collapsed, and took out the fan, fan shroud and part of the radiator. I dont want a repeat of that disaster.
So, my questions are
- Are the original OB mounts robust enough to not need replacements at this age
- If I were to upgrade, do I really need to source and replace the crossmember?
Cheers

The OB mounts are solid rubber and only fail when the metal and rubber separate. They're still cheaper than the liquid filled Porsche units at ~$250 each.
They rarely fail and usually last at least 30 years before letting go. But the engine shocks are more likely to fail and are ~ $70 each last I knew.
Going to the later units is considered a downgrade in reliability that is for sure.

Blake,
thanks for the confirmation.
Engine shocks? I thought I have been through every inch of the car. Never seen them.
I see Pelican lists them. But where are they mounted? Mid engine? Fore and aft?
Cheers
