The arrow is a bit dimmer than the "PNRD32" but you can definitely still see it in the dark. Getting it much brighter will be a challenge. Look at my pics #3 or #4 of the plate upside down. In the picture, to the right of the LED strip you see the back side of the white translucent "PNRD32" plastic, which does not move, so one "side" of the LED strip lights it up in a static manner.
The the left of the LED strip in the pic, the little rectangular white plastic tab is the "underside" of the arrow pointer. Problem it, it is attached to the black ribbed panel that moves back and forth when you move the shifter. So, as installed it is just getting ambient light from its "side" of the LED strip as it moves alongside the strip.
I suppose you might try to string another LED strip "underneath" the where the arrow slides, but it would be tricky and to not interfere with the movements. Or maybe some reflective/mirror tape (A/C duct tape) under where it slides, so the LED's reflect more up to it, instead of down into the black hole below it? You will see what I mean when you pull it all out.
Hey, if you order the kit I did, you will have three extra adhesive-backed LED strips to play-around-with for the arrow, and you can update the thread!

Love this mod! Thanks! I am a new owner and have not been out much at night yet, but each time I do I think "I wonder if this has a broken bulb or if I can make it light up..." so now I know! Cheers!

My '83s had a bracket with two bulbs at the ends, i will replace them with daylight led's and was bright like this thread!
On my '89s4 i did like this thread mod.
