Removing valves and "condoms"
This is perhaps a bit late if im wrong but...
RUT ROH...does this apply in removing the valves as well?
Ive done one head already. The valves pulled out with a bit of resistance as they passed by the seal..other than that very easily and smooth.. I assume this was the seal rubbing on the stem of the valve where the keepers are installed. I pulled them out straight and slowly and checked the end of the valve stem for any mushrooming that would damage the seal.
Looking at the quote above, Did i just buy my self 16 new valve seals doing this...
Do you need the "condoms"when you remove the valves as well?
If so..OH WELL! may as well replace them anyway!
all valves require "condoms" otherise you destroy the seal.

It might be possible to use sheaths when removing the valves, but you'd be "openning" the seal with the sharp edge of the sheath when sliding it down before removing the valve, this probably wouldn't be good. (When installing, the round end of the sheath opens the seal)
But too late for that anyway - good news is that the seals only cost a dollar or so, even if there are 32.
So now it's time to remove the seals - if you use pliers the action I found that worked best was not to simply pull up, but to twist backwards and forwards until you can hear the seal break away, then pull up.

No condom on removal. You can feel the valve stems for burrs and take them off w/ a fine stone before removal, but its really a case of pull and cringe as they slide out. Some go easier than others.

They actaully came out fine. This is a pretty low mile motor apparently (37k) so i wasnt worried about the "mushrooming" on the valve stem.
With my little PVC tool i think i yanked 16 valves in about 40 minutes.
Installation, well, that will be a different story im sure!
Since im lookng at some head work i may just end up getting new seals anyway.
thanks for the replies

Two and a half minutes per valve?! You're damn quick, probably took me four times as long. The seals come as part of the head gasket set, so no point not using them.
