Default Timing indicator slightly off - new water pump

I’m in the middle of the worlds longest timing belt/wp job on my 85 and I’ve got the new water pump installed and new belt on along with a new pk tensioner. I’m to the point of hand cranking the engine back to TDC but when I put the harmonic balancer back on, I noticed the timing indicator from the new water pump doesn’t exactly point to the 45 degree BTDC mark on the balancer. As you can see in the picture the mark is slightly off. How big of a problem is this?

BTW, I have not removed the flywheel lock yet.

Thanks

When you took the crank bolt out it slipped a tad bit, don't worry about it. Line everything up with the belt on and then double check it after you pull the flywheel lock.

Thanks Sean. Next stupid question for anyone willing to help. Looks like the passenger side cam also moved slightly after stringing the belt on and setting the tension. Is it close enough to correct with the 32V r tool or do I need to start over and restring the belt? The driver’s side mark appears to be correct.

Thanks

The last picture looks off by one tooth.

The white dot needs to be rotated to the left one tooth.

get a helper to hold the DS cam with a 32mm wrench,
put a zip tie through the pulley to hold the belt on its position,
while you remove the belt at the passenger side.

NOTE dont turn the cams by the 17mm bolt use the 32mm washer under the bolt

Sometimes I also mark the timing belt where I want the timing gear mark to line up.

Unless you have slop in the flywheel lock, the 45 degree mark has to be in the same place as when you took it apart.....unless you also changed the damper or the crankshaft.

Great...I probably screwed something up.

Didn’t change either. How do I get it realigned and where in the timing belt change process do I try the realignment?

The amount you are off is two crankshaft degrees, which is one camshaft degree, which is not enough to worry about.

If you really wanted to know where true TDC (and thus true 45 degrees before TDC), you would need to put the belt on correctly, where the crank is, right now. You would then need to build a piston stop (or a piston dial indicator that goes through the spark plug and find true TDC. You could then mark the damper to compensate for the error (if there is one.)

Big hassle, lots of time, and you would never "feel" the slight difference in cam timing.

Pretend like the pointer is pointing right at 45 degrees, right now, and put it back together.

On my 16v '78 I compensate for one tooth movement on the passenger side cam gear by setting it up one tooth off so after rotating the crank two revolutions to tdc the slack in the belt has the cam gear land right on the mark.

Thanks everyone. At a minimum I’m going to fix the passenger side cam alignment. For now, I won’t worry about the timing indicator being off.
