Odometer shows 63000. I forget the exact number. I think paint jobs must be more expensive where you live. I had a
color change paint job on my BMW M3. (bumpers, fenders, lights, hood, doors, engine, everything that could be removed
was removed) all parts were individually painted and reassembled. for less than $6500

Never heard of LSeat^^. I'd suggest getting a quote from Classic 9 and then decide...they do excellent work and really know the 928 seat(s). If you like what you hear, separate the backs from the bases, stuff in a box and get a quote (or just stack the front seats in a big box like I did) https://www.busfreighter.com/?gclid=...0aAph1EALw_wcB WYIT it'd be fun having pascha inserts installed...its all the rage more here: https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...asha-only.html Glad to see your renewed interest T

You can save quite a bit on shipping by getting the seat 'skins' from Classic 9 and having a competent local upholstery shop install them.

I gotta ask - Did you have any idea what you were getting into?

Did you do any research on 928s before you bought it?

It looks, from the pics, like it has potential.
It could be a nice driver, they don't need to look perfect to be a lot of fun.

First, deciede what you REALLY want from the car: fully restored classic? show car? "investment",Daily driver or 'Road Runner'?? It' s a crying shame to send a 928 'to the crusher' because it "Cost too much".
.Yours has MUCH better paint than my '83 S2, BUT I got mine DRIT CHEAP ($3500 for a "drive it home"'83 EuroS2 5-speed!!) I knew it would need work, but I'm an old school hot-rodder and still like working on cars at 72...I've got about $7k in parts in it, and I'm "almost' done with it (SO FAR>>>LOL) It was resprayed Cobalt Blue, but they did a crappy job of it and most of the clear coat is peeled off.
.I DON'T CARE!!! I've got one of 719 made, and it runs like 40 BEARS!! All I want is a very nice example of a fairly rare GT car that I can run if I want to..I'll get it painted eventually, but for now I'm going to wrap it. The interior was re-done in blue and cream/ivory and is still in pretty good shape..When I was cleaning the inside I found a ONE DEUTSCH MARK coin under one of the seats dated 1991...I'm going to 'drive it till it dies', or I do. LOL
Dr. Porsche said:"I built my cars to be driven, not polished" I Totally agree..
Your budget of $12-> 16K or so is doable IF: You do a lot of the work yourself( I do) and you have a realistic expectations as to what you end up with. I'm into mine about $6,000 in parts+the original $3500 +

On the dealer's lot..Black Tie Classics For sale:1983 Porche 928..$5900 OBO (A 300 Hp Euro 5-speed ,as it turns out, but they didn'tknow it)

"STOLE IT" for $3500 cash, drove it home laughing my @$$ off....YaHaHa

A 5-speed!! Nice interior, I'd say 85%

Even the rear seats look good

300Hp 28/11 engine K-Jet F.I.

6 years later---LikeI said Crappy re-spray I DON'T CARE

At "FRENZY" 2016

"FRENZY 2016

"On the road again" FRENZY 2016

At 2017 FRENZY with a new rear haetch

Blue Shark in your 6 o'clock 2017 FRENZY

Having FAR TOO MUCH FUN "I must be in a hurry, the trees are all blurry.. LOL" 2017 FRENZY
6 years in and I'm satisfied about what I got for the money.

You should be able to find a good shop there in Florida, it seems to be one of the places Porsches hang out? I have two cars I shipped from there all the way to CA over the past 10 years, my 928 parts car and my 944 S2 both came from Florida (Orlando & Sarasota respectively). I shipped the parts car terminal to terminal for $650, the 944 was treated better and cost me $1500. That's one way of course, but once you have it fixed up, driving it back from CA might be fun?

Still, I'd be surprised if a quick search in your area wouldn't turn up a shop that does restorations on these cars. Maybe not one as famous as Greg, but someone qualified. There are a few regulars on the 944 list from Florida, MAGK944 comes to mind, who might be able to steer you in the right direction? Doesn't cost anything to ask...

Ok, I know everyone was waiting for my 0.02 cents

Paul, you have a nice example there, It's worth keeping or saving.
My read is that you have already developed the "love/hate" relationship with it. That's normal!
My guess would be that you have already gotten bites from fellow RL'ers though back channels, so the fact that you are still here means you want to keep it.

Everything you read in this thread is true.
So really the decision for you is: are you going to DIY or pay somebody. Both have advantages.
I took the DIY path. If I paid somebody to restore a 928 for me I would own a Ferrari 308 instead. (read cost involved).

My advice is to get yourself some breathing room. Find an indy wrench or even a fellow 928 owner to do basic mechanical sorting. See if you can talk them into chasing the short that's
melting your harness behind the dash pod.
Then drive the car, forget about dumping five figures into your car for a professional paint job.
If you still love the car, you can spend big money later.

Don't give up. You can do pretty much whatever you imagine and can dream up, especially on a car. If something is too big or heavy for us to move, we find a tool to do this task. If we don't have the money to pay someone to do it, we learn the skills to do it, then, execute - often on a much longer - but linear trajectory to success. But, please note, these cars' assembly procedures as seen on the videos on youtube. Take note of 'how' they built these cars. Then, take note of 'how' (process)many 928 owners undertake to do things like engine maintenance, etc. Ignore the chorus' of owners bitching about this or that bolt being difficult to access, and circle back to how these cars were built for your answer. The answers are there, just look and study for a bit - I've done this and leapfrogged over tons of common advice herein and done big things easily and simply and quickly and at a very cost-favorable basis too. There is no cogent reason why these cars have languished here for so long - we owners just need to do 'big picture' tasks vs the small tasks (which eat your shorts in costs and labor) and the close-by sister systems are still 'there' untouched and showing age etc. Hope this car doesn't end up in the crusher or some yahoo undertaking activities such as 'pulling the engine' out (remember Porsche never installed engines) just 'reverse' the process - think big, and, there are not many people that are thinking big because their Left and Right Limits are engaged too strongly. (If you were in the military you know what this means).
