Well for once I can be of some assistance, since I stay in South Africa in Pretoria.
When I bought my '90 S4 standard as it came from the factory with 150 000km on the clock I took it to Dastek to have the unichip fitted.
They phoned me to come pick my car up without the unichip because they could not get any gain with it.
I appreciated their honesty and only payed a minimal fee for the dyno tune.
It only confirms that Porsche tuned these cars to such a high standard that it is unlikely you will see any gain by a chip.
If you made other mods the chip may help to get the tuning right but on a standard engine youre gona waist money with a chip.
Oops sorry this posting was suppose to be a reply to a posting on the unichip. Anyway I was told that the chip will make a huge difference by the guy who sold the car to me.
This might be another can of worms but what have fellow Rennlisters had to say about the Autothority 928 chips? That seems to be the set-up I hear most about for these cars. Would love to hear some thoughts / opinions however disparate they may be? Thank you in advance...

While we are on chips I had a Perfectpower chip also Piggy back fitted to my 325ic Turbo a while back.
I had endless problems with the chip losing its memory and needing reprograming every time the battery went a little low even though it still had enough power to start the car it was not enough to keep the chip happy.
The manufacturers sugested different solutions without any success.
I installed a set of Autothority chips in my 89S4 two years ago. I also added a rising rate fuel pressure regulator. The rear wheel horse power increased from 254 to 276 at 6000 RPM. I was running 91 octane pump gas. The car is an automatic.
I have heard that other manufacturers chips don't work. That seems to be the general consensus.
Autothority has a money back guarantee. 928 International stocks their chips.
I love my Autothority chips on my 87" auto. They definitely improved the overall drivability and power of the car. The car drive even better when I added a bottle of 104+ octane booster. I had the chips installed by a Porsche repair shop and they commented that the chips really improved the drivability of the car when I picked up my car.
By the way the stock chips are tuned for 90 octane gas and I believe the Autothority chips are tuned for 92 octane gas, so there is room for more power from aftermarket chips.
I have had Autothority chips in my car for 7 years. Can't prove any quantifiable HP increase because I never dynoed. Seat of the pants appreciation though. It was worth the $$ for me.
Before the chips, the engine would be pretty dead until @ 2700- 2800 rpms (working off old memory here) then would kick in. After the chips the dead zone ended at @ 2200 rpms. I am happy with the the arrival of power at lower rpms. The character and sound of the engine changed a bit for the better as well.
