You might call Tom at 928 International and see if they have a decent used wire. I bought one from them not long ago. If the color of the wire is still bright green and the ends are not crispy most likely it's OK. I don't know how to test one. I think I paid $40 but I have no memory but I can always remember good gins

I agree with Hacker....keep those green wires fresh.

There's been plenty of very nice early cars sold, over the years, very cheap because of an intermittent green wire. I've personally fixed several. I remember one very nice car that Mark Anderson bought....to part out....that we fixed with a new green wire. Took about 10 total minutes to logic out and install a new wire.

There's,a simple way to make a cheaper green wire.

Buy the short $50 wire. Cut it in half. Splice in a longer piece of green wire between the two ends using Deutch waterproof, gold plated mini connectors. This works great and can be easily done for $80 (not one at a time)....if one has the Deutch pieces and the very special crimping tool. (I use these connectors quite a bit to repair various problems...also super common to be used by professional custom wiring loom makers.)

rockauto.com has the short one for $37 shipped to door('88 911). The RG-59 mini coax 4' is $2.14 shipped to door. Gold plate mini conn (Allied elec) $6.32 x 2 shipped to door.

About $55 with about 30 min of work. Will have a splice, but it'll all be new.

Nice work! But still the last place I'd want to save $90, been there / done that with intermittent green wires.

So what happened to the green wire that was on your car? How do you know it is no good if it is still in place? I bought a new green wire for my '84 from 928sRus a couple of years ago for I think $100. At any rate I did the swap as part of a top end refresh on my car which had 65K miles on it at the time. For all I know the existing green wire was OK.

Since I love the idea of a high school kid jumping in on these cars I tell you what, you can have my used green wire for free, just cover the shipping. I think one of the connectors has a crack on the housing, so you may or may not need to repair it. No guarantees it fixes your symptoms but it's not doing me any good sitting in a box in my garage.

Same wire type, just black color. You could spray it green I guess.

Be careful when you strip back the weave ground coating. Take it one strand group at a time.

Sigh, I'm not advocating, just supplying alternatives. I get your point, and agree with it. This kid is trying to get his 40YO car running in the mid-winter, in the frozen tundra, on a budget. How about we not let perfect be the enemy of 'good enough'? I'm thinking with what I've seen of his workmanship that he can make the splice job work for 1/3 price for now, and move onward with the project.
