Shredded a T-belt on the White Guy
Welp... not doing the t-belt/water pump on the White Guy (1980 5spd) when he arrived bit me in the ****, but not before I got a ton of Bwhaaa out of him. Had it about 6 years, did shocks, big red brakes, 18" wheels, steel ball joints right after I bought it. Then drove the **** out of it for 5 years.
Live about 1/4 mile from the Pacific, it's really wet here. Last year or so it would miss if I didn't start it every day. Heat cycle, all better. Then it got much worse. Winter and a bunch of rain and it got worse and worse until it simply would not run after replacing temp, temp II, plugs, brain (thanks 928Intl for the annual 1/2 price sale!). I was certain it was way rich. Finally had it towed to local P-shop, (I was busy doing clutch on Red Guy) first thing he did was check cam timing. Driver side off 2 teeth, Pass 6 teeth. Belt was toast. One dead injector. Couple vacuum leaks due to age and shabby o-ring into afm. Running very lean. lolz He put in a new belt, left the water pump and rollers which I'll do this summer, new injector, he's got the full bwhaaaa back.
To add to the saga, I finished the clutch on the Red Guy and it was good so I drove it to work while the white guy got ministered to. Half way there, the belts let loose, because the crank bolt loosened, because I put the crank bolt washer in backwards. oops. Note to self: the recess goes toward the flywheel. AAA is a great deal by the way. As luck would have it, it's the same driver that picked up the white guy. We laughed. Rectified the orientation, red loctite, 3/4" breaker bar, that **** is tight and will not come loose until I want it to.
People ask me why I have more than one... and the answer is you need an emergency backup if you refuse to drive anything other than a 928. Sucks when they break at the same time. Always an adventure with these magnificent beasts. But when they're right... see ya.
