1989 928S4 automatic cant get it to shift to 3rd or 2nd
My 89S4 , drives fine in D, but if I try to put it into 3rd or 2nd, it feels like the shifter doesnt want to go lower than drive? Like something is blocking it? Anyone experience this?
On a side note, my passanger side door handle broke from the outside. are driver and passanger side replacements the same? Best place to get a replacement?
Thank you!

Check for binding in the console. Sometimes if put together in correctly the plastic selector binds.
Also check the selector cable at the transmission and shifter as the rubber boot sometimes turns to gummy goo or the boot is missing and the grime on the cable will not allow it to slide. Or as in my case the cable was frayed and led to a broken cable.
I ignored this and one day my shift cable broke in the basement of a parking garage. An experience I would not want to repeat.

The door handle frames are different right and left.
Odd the the pass side broke, usually drivers side breaks first...advise doing both now, because..the other side is probably coming soon...
Its a much easier job on the S4 than earlier cars, there's an larger/extra hole in the inner door skin to get access to the area.
Once the security plate is out of the way, its downhill from there. Up to you to put that back or not..I didnt.
