Noisy in car
I had my 90 S4 for some time now and although its a great car I couldn't understand how it could be called the greatest grand Tourer with so much noise on the open road. I use to be dead tired after any trip of 300kms or more.
Then my power steering bushes failed and while I had that fixed I also had the motor mounts replaced, what a difference now you can have a conversation at 160km/h.
Then I replaced the rear tyres, after much home work I fitted Pirelli Acimetricals. I can't believe its the same car. Now I can agree its the greatest GT car ever made you should be able to trave all day without getting tired. I'm already planing a weekend away to apreciate this new qietness.

Tires can make a HUGE difference as you have found. I have had the
Pirellis you mentioned and they are very good........better then most give them credit for.
If you think your 90 is quiet now, take a ride in a '91 with the extra sound deadening Porsche put in, and then a GTS with the aero mirrors. Quieter still.

Hi Mike
What is the life of the Pirelli like compared to something like Bridgestone SO3?
Where is the extra sound proofing on the newer models?

Yes Johan there are a number of 928s running around that would benefit from some T L C . It seems many of the aggressive tread tires get unbelievably LOUD as they wear sounding much like a really bad wheel bearing . The 1991 actually has the improved sound absorber under the carpet and rear inner wheel liners ...My poor old very brown 1980 with no rear carpet , no spare , no rear seat backs with four race wheels tires in the back , jack , tool box ......I am not going to fall asleep !

Can't tell you between the S03 and Pirelli, but I have Pilot Sports on the
GT now and while the PS's are a little smoother riding, the Pirellis were
just as good in the dry and wet.......in my opinion. The Pirellis actually
looked better on the car.......for the same tire size.....245/45 16" the tread width of the Pirellis was almost an inch wider! The Pilot Sports, althought they look and perform great.......look just a little skimpy on the 9.5" rear Design 90 rim. I hear that Bridgestones may run a little skimpy also, but don't know for sure.
As Jim stated, there were a few sound deadening items added to the '91 model.......some even showed up on some late '90 models. My '90 for example is of late year production and came with the the sound absorbing carpet, extra windshield insulation around the moldings, but not the extra rear fender liners.
