Default Tailpipe soot question

After installing a new RMB, and noticing how sooty the pipes appear, I wondered it this was an indication of a rich condition. I've never seen tailpipes with soot. But then this is about the only vehicle where I've ever paid much attention. So forgive me if this is a dorky question.

Yeah, I was just curious. Funny how I used to spend all my time playing with machines. I mean, I could pull plugs and injectors. And I will. But sadly, I've become lazy. Whatever happened to building turbocharged engines at 2am? But then whatever happened to the days when one could speed around. You know, before radar guns. Oh, those were the days.
One thing- this car is doing it's best to bring out the kid in me again.

Hey, how's everything going in Chilliwack. I love that name!

Could also be from burning oil. Maybe rings. More likely due to oil ingestion through the PCV circuit.

It's got good compression. Good leakdown. That doesn't say anything about guide seals. But I don't see any evidence of blue smoke. Then again, it can be hard to see until under the right conditions of light.
PCV, huh? Yuk. You know, that old 55 Chevy was so cool. Climb into the engine compartment, and sit down and work. And there were no black boxes. No maze of tubing and wires. Just a coil and distributor. Only tools required were a screwdriver and a crescent wrench. But it sure didn't drive like a 928.
I will be pulling valve covers and stuff one of these decades. Life is rough.

looks good. mine finally is doing that, after i richened up my mixture this last season. the previous season, the pipe was barely dirty, and that was a concerned. marc tomas was in the stands at Sears for the last PcA race of 2002 and he said my car sounded lean down the front straight. for 2003 i turned the fuel regs up .5 turn and now i have that kind of soot.
fuel ratios on the dyno were in the 12.5 to 13.0 range.

not to worry, its fine and probably good!

Thanks. That was my first thought as well- better rich than lean.
So, I really do have too much time on my hands...

FWIW
Mine is similar and on rare occasions soot will actually creep to the top of the tips. Not much but i notice it. Seems to appear only on humid mornings -extremely rare here-.
I noticed it recently when I dropped the exhaust but while looking around under the sHARk -TT pinch bolt- I happened to look under the engine at the squashed motor mounts and found myself looking up the passenger side exhaust manifold collector. It was very clean with just the faintest of a light brown surface fuzz, no residue build-up. The O2 sensor was very clean as well.
BTW Does anyone know what that dead-end flange on the rear upper side of the pass. exhaust is for? It even has what appear to be bolt -mount (?)- cutouts.

EGR, used on the CIS cars.

Glenn, mine is a pickup truck. I had to use the front seat.

Lizard, I have looked pretty carefully for large acreage in BC. In fact, some of the last places I could find were up in Chilliwack. I have since given up looking. Seems there isn't much left. BUT... If you know where I can find a couple hundred acres.

One thought on soot could also be low speed driving. But anyways you've all dispelled any problems. Fantastic. Now it's time to go for a spin. Sure makes grocery shopping fun. I always take the long way.

Gregg, if your looking for a few hundred acres then you want to go further into the country, what are you planning on doing with the land if you dont mind me asking? I might just know of a few spots, and it is a pitty I didnt know about that 1 year ago there was someone right about my parents place who had 200 + acres for sale going out into the mountain, but there was nothing really behind it so it was closer to about 300 acres, it has since sold to a group of munks from seattle,
but let me know what you want it for and I will give you some ideas
