225x50x16 is the correct size. Just about any modern tire will be vastly superior to what was being made in 1986. As Tony points out it depends on how and when you drive the car. Most buy tires for the design on the tread ....how it LOOKS

Michellin Pilot Sport 4S. 225/40ZR18 Front, 285/35ZR18 Rear. Very impressed with these dry/wet summer tires. Nice and quiet too.
