Default What should the pressure be of the power steering fluid that the power steering pump

I have a 1987 Porsche 928 S4 that has very hard steering. I would like to test the PSI of the fluid that is put out by my Power Steering pump.

For some reason I have it in my head that the system operates at about 80 barg.

Hopefully someone will be a bit more definitive

My high-pressure ps pump relieves at 100 barg.

the original has lower relief as Fred points out.

It’s easier to rebuild the pump than it is to plumb a pressure-test fixture on the car.

1500PSI is the highest the systems can run.
Make sure your hoses are not reversed on the rack.

That value is consistent with the notional operating pressure I have in my head.

Any system that has a positive displacement pump needs a relief valve to prevent the housing from grenading in the event of a blockage- that or the belt slips due to the motive force needed to drive the pump in such conditions.

I replaced the pump with a rebuilt one i bought from 928srus . I replaced the steering rack with a rebuilt one from 928intl and i replaced the high pressure hose as well....Unless I was drinking too much beer when I replaced the steering rack, I put the new one in as the old one was installed. That being said I will crawl under it again and recheck the hoses to the rack.It steers like an 18 wheeler even when all the pieces were replaced. I even checked the steering wheel knuckle to see if it was jamming up and it turns freely......

Go drive another 928 please. The parking lot steering effort is higher than you might otherwise expect. At speed it’s just perfect.

I used to have extra hard steering, then I replaced the tie rods and it got a whole lot better.

The 928 has notoriously heavy steering compared to most power steering equipped cars. I don't notice it until I drive a more modern car.
