Default Hot Tank

Anybody had their blocks cleaned by hot tanking?

Any pros..cons..tips...BTDTs one should be aware about with the alloy block/parts?

Or..any other alternative ways to get them nice and clean

Thanks.

I wanted to do that with my heads and a few other things. I would think that a machine shop would just do THAT service, right?

Any info you find, could you share it here?

Thanks.

Well I will check $$ for tank dip when I pick my crank up tomorrow, only concern might be what effect any acid would have on the bores. When I asked Walt he said he had done this and it left a stange pattern on the cylinders, didn't matter to him because he was boring anyway.

Cool

Why not call Ted Robinson of German Precision in Sunnyvale, CA who has a tank but doesn't use acid. He cleans aluminum P parts like that all the time.
Here is the number: (408)747-0728 His "tank" uses hot water and pressure.

Me share info on here, NEVER.

I do have a pressure washer so i will probably get some degreaser and do it myself if all else fails. I just thought the tanking would be more thorough.

You do need to be careful. Many hot tanks can be very casutic if they are doing mostly iron and steel. Our parts washer uses 180 degree water with a mild soap. We just cleaned Blown Beast's block and it looks like new. If you were closer I'd say bring it by.

Heh! Damn, I've heard all about you Delta pukes!

-Those of you not connected with aviation need a little background info. Delta guys like Tony [I've met him: He's like your ideal neighbor, conservative, quiet, well-groomed~] always have a gleam in their eye. Either they:

1. Have 600 horsepower Porsche's back home and use the hell out of them....

2. 6 wives.

3. Are wearing pink women's underwear, and frequent Key West-

In all seriousness, Tony you should make a thread in which you post step by step your process of rebuilding your engine. It would be hugely educational, and a great use of bandwidth. Keep up the good work and fly safe!

2) Still holding onto Number #1, and since i just measured the block halves and the dish washer and have concluded im 3 inches short, Wife #1 will be keeping me i hope.

3) Now Valentines Day is coming up..hmmm Pink, eh..unless my wife washes them with my Red shop rags I Dont think its gonna happen.
I have yet to go to Key West...its on the list though.

Ill keep the pictures coming. Now I'm down to this...uh....Now what??

Tony,

There are different tank solvents for steel and aluminum, You definitly want yours dipped in an aluminum only tank mixture. As the Steel mixture will eat the block up.

Z

P.S. How do I know this, well thats a funny story. When I first started working I worked as a Parts Cleaner for the Bus Company here in town, and we had 2 solvent tanks one for aluminum and one for steel, One day the facilities crew came by and changed the solvent in the tanks, They happened to reverse the solvent and tanks and the result was a ruined Transmission Casing and various 8v71 blower rotors. and a very unhappy forman.

I just dropped my block off at a Shop.

$45 bucks over the phone...
showed up THEN told the lady at the front desk it was a 5.0l V8 from a Porshce 928.

$65 bucks

I told her.."Eh, i called 1 hr ago and was told 45"

I paid 45 Typical of Porsche ownership isnt it!

Cool thing was when i dropped it off around back the guy came out and said.."hmmm...928???..havent seen one of those in a while"
Made me feel a bit better.

I asked them and they use a citrus based cleaner of some sort, not the caustic soda stuff anymore( something like that)

Yep.........
Have been dealing with various kinds of service shops in getting my parts made. I am certian that when they find that are making something for a Porsche the price is immediately inflated by no small ammount. I have thought several times of lying to them and telling them it's for some other car. I just can't think of an appropriate car to tell them it's for.
