Default Got Sludge - Horror

Getting a car ready to sell and needed to pull the engine to replace the head gaskets. I presume some of what is on the oil pickup is head gasket material.

When I pulled the oil pan I saw more sludge than I have ever seen.

Previously owned by a lawyer that prided himself of his collection of vintage motorcycles and a well equipped machine shop. When I pulled the rack to get to the motor mounts one side - bolt and washer were missing and one of the lower bell housing bolts was missing as well. I think he did not drive the 928 much except to go to his summer house on the lake.

Gadzooks! It's as deep as the fins!

There's a ring around the oil pickup!

It's abut a 1/4" deep

Inside the oil pickup.

Thought mine was bad. Looks like he saved about 30 years worth of oil changes. Was there a proper oil level on the stick?

Worst than my nuts that were stuck in the alternator.

Like Porsche has always done, they tried to be very subtle and get around "the problem" in tech bulletin #8821 (Book E, Page 83.)

"The problem" was so extensive, they finally had to "come clean" in tech bulletin #8902 (Book F, Page 25.) and tell everyone why the change was made and why people had/were going to have crazy amounts of sludge in their oil pans.

Of course, no recall or warranty....."the problem" only showed up in "long term testing".....way past any warranty period.

If you are planning on doing 928 repairs for very long, you simply can't buy and "sit on" enough '89 and later heads.

We're going to see hundreds of these failures, in the next 5-10 years.

What is different about the 89 heads - besides the bosses.

That's it.

Redesigned to prevent the cracking that the '87/'88 heads suffered from.

Looks like the first and last oil change was in 87.

I got the impression from your comment that the 87-88 heads were a cause of the sludge and that's why you collect 89 heads.

I'm assuming that your sludge is from a small amount of water leaking into the oil, for a long time, since your description of the owner did not seem like a person that would not change the oil...

I've never seen sludge like that in a 928 engine before.

Greg, do you have pics of the cracked head bosses from that 1R S4 motor you had maybe 2 months back? I took a few pics but they were before the bolts came out.

Here;s a couple of pictures of the valve train from the same engine. The cam lobes are perfect.
