Looks like someone was trying to fix a problem with the computers and instead of getting rebuilt units, they spent a load of time doing this.

Now I will be impressed if Dr Bob or anyone else for that matter can explain that lot.

Does the car actually run?

That looks something like an old Dastek unit and you splice it into the harness like that. It was the pre SharkTuner days.

How does it drive?
Does it start easy and idle smooth?

The white plug is obviously the IMU bypassed (in case Bobinsocal doesn't know)

I’m gonna bet that it’s an IMS (Ingnition Monitoring System) relay in that ‘89 that’s been bypassed unless it came out of Russia...

OP: what a mess. Condolences and good luck. I might be considering a used engine harness.

It doesn't really matter if we call it a Unit or a System IMU or IMS, and it sure doesn't matter to the OP, but on Rennlist it is usually referred to as the IMS relay and thus searching for IMS finds threads. I doubt searching for IMU finds much.

Yeah. Don’t throw away any old, dead or bypassed IMU relays. The Men in Black will be comin’round to collect them for refurbishment.

I remember those things. If I understand them correctly they modify input signals to "fool" the LH and EZ units into thinking something else is going on and thus modify the output. Knowing what I know nowadays after using ST2 I doubt that they can do much of any meaning other than for high output motors wherein they could no longer read the airflow beyond a certain input voltage from the MAF.

As to what such item could do for a stock motor is beyond me..

The operative questions at this point are:
- how badly has the engine harness been damaged?
- does Bobinsocal have the wherewithal to repair it or should a used harness be sourced?

Dave,

I would think rehabilitation should be straightforward. I managed to rehabilitate my doggy looking MAF connection a few years ago and that seems to work fine so I would think re-working those points of interconnection should be just as feasible. I used crimp connectors with integral heat shrink in the engine bay but in the footwell the heat shrink feature is not really needed. Alternatively a soldered connection with some heat shrink overlay could be used- not too difficult I suspect.
