Do You Take Your Car through The Car Wash??
Just curious. I'm on my second 928 and have never used the car wash. Just afraid something bad might happen and that it isn't that ggod for the paint/car?

Nope. Always wash all of our cars by hand in our driveway even though that is now a crime. It is now illegal to wash your car here in vegas, except at those self wash places or an auto wash. Hah!

Those places are awful for your finish - I'm an apartment dweller, so I use the self-wash coin place closest to me. The place is right next to Wrigley Field and used to be every Saturday I would alternate between my 911SC and my Rolls-Royce. People were always asking me if I played for the Cubs - like one of them would drive cars as old as mine! Or wash their own cars!
The one time I went to a hand-wash place recommended by a friend. Went ballistic when the guy scrubbing the tires starts scrubbing my paint with the same brush! "What?" he says, "The bristles are kind of soft." "And the dirt and gravel from the tires, is that soft?"
That's the last time anyone else touched one of my cars.

The 928 ground clearance is too low to be dragged through one of those automatic washers and the brushes will scratch the finish. Hand washing gives me the sensual pleasure of running my hands over the body and admiring the curves.

I've had my car two years, it's only been washed half a dozen times. I can't see the outside when I'm driving it, even so I get very depressed each time I return to my car (which is parked on the street) and find yet another scratch. When it's washed half the time I do it myself, half I pay a large team of Eastern Europeans about $10 to do a pretty thorough but careful job.

Not no but hell no! They advertise that their "brushes" are gentle, and I'm sure they have made an effort to make them less abrasive, but in the end they still pick up grit from other cars, and then that grit gets ground against your paint.
THIS is the most serious issue in washing your car. I have two wash mits- one for the lower sections, such as the wheels, the front air dam, and the rocker panels....since these get the nastiest. The second mit does everything above. I only use soap when I plan to wax the car afterwards, and I have no nozzle on my garden hose- it's just my finger and the open end.
The wash mits are used ONCE between washings. I keep them on top of my washing machine, and they never get against my paint if they haven't been washed. Again, abrasive grit destroys your finish quick!
-If you live in the cold and frozen north, and have to drive your 928 in the winter, then I suggest washing it with a pair of rubber garden gloves. I grew up in Michigan [same winter weather as Sweden], and when I helped my dad wash his cars, we could do it with these without freezing our hands.

Yep!
But only the pressure gun, bay-side side of the house.
I used to wash and wax -self-stripping cheap stuff with a tad of carnuba-
Pattycakes twice a week.
But I messed up -hand washing- once after a typical Texas dust/sand storm. I thought I had washed/rinsed all of the sand off, Wrong! ended up with light swirling.
Ever since its' off to the wash. I use the wet down feature, then High pressure rinse at the roof gutters, window trim, wheel wells, hood nesting area, but, especially the rear hatch and fender spoiler areas as thats where sand really collects. I make sure to reverse blow thru the drains to remove any debris. You have to be selective, stay away from bays where there is evidence of 4X4 use, mud clumps and enough sand to make a beach.
I also do not get real close to the paint on high pressure, yet make sure to lay the brush/soap wand down and blow the hell out of it with high pressure- still have to look for grease globs on the brush that can hold sand-.
Engine compartment...NEVER!
And of course when drying always open doors, hood, and hatch to eliminate sitting water and clean seals.

Even the brushless drivetru washers are not worth the risk. I once took mine to a "no-touch" washer to get the dust, pollen and dirt off (the stuff that shows up the day after a wash on black paint).
My car is not lowered but you know that little rail that guides your wheel through the wash...
you can guess the rest.
