Default Hot passenger coil - 90GT

Started the GT this evening and ran it for a few minutes, tested trans, clutch and Hans new shifter which all worked well. When I turned car off went to put the plastic caps on the coils as I noticed I hadn't installed them. The driver side is an older black coil and the passenger side is one of the new Bosch silver coils.

I noticed the new silver coil was too hot to even touch. The black coil was cool to the touch. I haven't ever had a coil get that hot. This doesn't seem normal.

Thoughts?

I'm curious about the new coils as well. The silver ones look really out of place, where the black ones blend in.

Silver coils are the work of the devil, not surprising that they are running hot. Pull them both and compare the resistance between the two coils: Between the two low-voltage terminals, and from either low-voltage terminal to the high-voltage connection, for both coils. Then toss the silver one in the trash, whatever the reading. And no, painting it black won't change its fundamental evilness.

Then call Tom at 928 Int'l and get a couple of used original black coils-- one to install and one for spare. (Remember that anything that you have a spare for won't fail). And of course check the resistance of those also.

It could also be the ignition amp in the front, if it is not Bosch then get another one of those also (used is fine, they rarely fail).

Yes. Not the same coil as the original.

The new silver coils also have a high failure rate.

Look at the country of origin. If you don't mentally associate that country with high quality products....you don't want to buy a part from there.
