Default Engine ID plate

I'm looking for the M28 XX on my engine. Where is it stamped? Do I need to move or remove anything to get to it?

I just talked to the pervious previous owner of the '84. He ran the hell out of it at Laguna Seca till the notorious oil starvation killed the car's original motor, then put in a used replacement. He couldn't recall where the motor came from, or how many miles it had prior to installation, only that it was in good condition. I just want to double-check what block in sitting in there.

The funny thing is, I have detailed records back to '87 for it. There's a year or two gap in the records when this guy owned it. Because he worked at a shop and did repairs himself, there are no invoices, and he never kept notes. He also said he rebuilt the tranny and the smog pump.

Jessa,
I'll look tomorrow.
I seem to recall a number you could see assuming engine is clean.
Drivers side I think looking down at the heads.

This is where it is, but it may not help much as the heads and front of the engine have been removed

Behind your oil dipstick and a little to the right, look straight down and you should see a flat area about the size of a 1/2 stick of gum.
You might want to get a long screwdriver with a rag wrapped around the end with some cleaner to clean off the area so you can see it better.

Thanks Jim,
All I found was fresh anti-freeze and oil in the valleybehind the thermostat/H2O pump.
I'm blaming this on YOU, Jessa!
Just what I needed , more work!
This is a bummer since I mailed my spare oil filler canister cap seal to John up in Missouri last month after checking this very area, didn't need it , right?
Hoses look good, thermostat seal I hope...

Thanks everyone for the pictures. Sorry John for the pain, Pattycakes must dole out enough without outside help.

Jessa,
Actually, Pattycakes is namesaked to my Mom.
Who, as the beautiful wife of a successful attorney, has always been high maintenance.
Mom says;" I'm a classy broad so the expence comes with the territory ".
Ergo, my Mom and my sHARk have a lot in common.

OK, its a M28/20. 83-84 US-spec, just as its supposed to be. There was that lingering hope that it was a Euro motor and I somehow just never noticed the extra power...

The car's odometer was broken when I bought it, milage estimated at 160k to 180k. I don't know how many miles ago the engine was changed, or how many miles the replacement engine had when it was installed. Now, I have a new (rebuilt) odometer reading about 3k miles, a car of vaguely 200k miles, and an engine of god only knows how many miles, probably fewer than the rest of the car. Funny what can happen in a short gap in maintainence records.

Thumbs up

Jessa,
If I might be so bold as to inquire to the cost of and location of the Odometer rebuilder?
Was it that place out of the Hollywood area?Ifyou feel frisky after the Income tax returns you could have a compression/leakdown check done instead of the Old hat -luxurious, pampering, memorable to your dying day- lower Baja vacation.
Better yet take the Burgundy-Weinrot?- beast to a local community college that offers Automotive associates Degrees and have them do it for a song.
That way you get the Vacation as well.
