That means they were not factory original. They must have been added later. They could be the Porsche strips with the "Pins" stripped off, or some aftermarket strips.

brendan,

we cut the rear quarter panels in two places just as is pictured in the appropriate section of the workshop manual. i dont think anything is gained through installing the complete section and in fact removing the old one may upset the clean shut lines of the rear hatch.

the holes left by the deleted rub strips were welded closed and the excess metal ground away. the body shop actualy trailered the car to another crowd who specialise in this type of welding and they complained about the dificulty. i think by industrial welding standard the panels are quite thin, the locals here are more used to maintaining oil rigs in the north sea!

randy, i dont know if you picked up on my location but all the 928 cars here have dual rear fogs and no bumperettes.

Thanks for those pics Nick. That's solved one mystery for me - how the lower edge of the panel was extended. It makes sense to to leave that section of the old panel in place on the car rather than trying to construct a full panel off it.

I see you had a bit of an attack of tin worm around the fuel filler, That's such a common place for these cars to rust, I have the same problem, and so have quite a few of the cars for sale that I have been looking at over the last few months.

As this is caused by all the road muck that is thrown up into the recesses of the arch have you thought about fitting the full rear wheelarch liners that came on the GTS only (similar to the ones in the front of your car). With your new quarter panels they should fit without much problem and they should keep your new panels nice and dry and safe.

Cheers

Thats great nick. Thanks for sharing those pics. I am not suprised that you were told that the welding was difficult.

Wow. that is a nice color. The rear GtS fendors look awesome too. How much did all this cost? If I may ask... - Ruf

Nick, I don't suppose you know if that wrecked GTS still has it's engine intact? I've been keeping my eyes open for for one for a while, but they seem to be going for silly money at the moment. Again on cost - did you pay full whack for those panels, I think they're normally about £750 each. If you have found a cheaper source I could be tempted to stick a pair in the back of the cupboard for a rainy day!

One last thing, you mentioned changes to the windscreen surround? what's that about then?

And thanks, you are a real inspiration!

Cheers
