Seat rail hold down bolts MIA. Help needed.
My seat got a little wobbly the other day and upon inspection I see that one of my M 6x12 countersunk bolts was gone. At least I think that is the correct size for my '78? I got another bolt from Home depot and though I would be able to solve my loose seat right away. Evidently not.. There seems to be nothing for it to grab onto to counter hold it. I did not see any way to get to the other side to add a nut. Can someone help
I would hate to accelerate and end up in the back seat with my knees against the roof panel. It could look cool driving that way, but I can only assume reaching the pedal may prove a challenge and local law enforcement may frown upon that.

I'm confused (not like that's news).
Are you missing the bolt that holds the seat to the rail?
Or the bolt that holds the lower rail to the body?
Ok, it's the bolt that holds the seat rail in.

I believe...
You are in need of the Allen head bolt and ‘receiver’ shown below.
the little metal receiver block slides into the cavity underneath the attachment channel. Bolt obviously goes in from the top of the seat rail.
most of our parts suppliers have the receivers - I had a friend with a Cnc machine make some for me as they are kind of pricey for what they are.
i got the new Allen bolts from belmetric.

I found these bolts easiest to work on with seat at max height first, then full rearwards for front bolts, full forward for rears. If height is a problem getting an allen drive into a bolt, I have found this type of wrench useful.

Should work as long as its not a Miata seat bolt - about the tightest bolts I have ever struck, in 2 cars a few years apart.

As sg says you are missing the nut plate that goes under the rail. They are a little different than that for a '78, but you get the idea. Mark has them used, but they are a little pricey. Hopefully you don't need them all. Also, the screws are supposed to be allen heads, as stated.

Jake - on the 78, the bolt is a 10mm hex head, the first item identified in the picture Ross posted in the OP. For clearance sake, I had to grind the 10 socket down in order for it and the socket wrench to fit into the groove and under the seat and onto the bolt head. Also, the receiver plate has only one hole on mine. There are 4 bolts and plates per seat. I lost one once, and found a suitable replacement bolt at the local hardware store. I agree that the problem is that the plate is missing. As stated, fish around underneath in the slot with an extending magnet tool and you'll find it. I always lose a plate in the slot in the front side when I swap my front seats out (I frequently pull the good pascha seats and run around with the spare non-pascha seat set). Anyway, it really doesn't matter if you use an Allen head bolt or a hex head, so long as the threads fit into the receiver.

The 'nut place' will slide down the rail when the bolt is removed.
I can't remember if it slides to a spot where it falls out of the rail, or if it stays in the rail.
A magnet with an extending handle, a small pick and a small, long, pair of needle nose pliers were what I used to retrieve it.
After the first mishap, I learned to hold the plate in place when I unbolted the seat and to pull the plate out and put it in a safe place.
