There were several efforts at plug-n-play S4 performance chips in the last couple decades. The common method was more advance and more fuel equals more power. Reality is that they "felt" better but in fact offered marginal benefits at best and marginal at best risk of engine damage. I invested in Autothority chips for my car, and had issues immediately with pinging at low-mid engine speeds and mid+ loads on hot days. Car had working knock sensors yet still had more advance than the engine could use even with the extra fuel. They were purchased through one of our trusted vendors, who went to bat for me (and others) to find a workable solution. The chips were replaced with updated versions for the GT, and were better but still pinged under my normal driving conditions. Out they came. Since then, others have managed to just copy those chips and add their names to them. In fact anybody with a PROM burner and some raw PROMs can make a set of their very own, add a label and market them. Still there's that marginal at best risk to the engine.
Mine are enshrined in their original boxes, and will stay there to remind me that there's no such thing as a free lunch no matter how much it costs. I will not put them in a car except as maybe a dash decoration.
Current options for plug-ins include the ones Ken [used to] offer, in conjunction with his recommended fuel system mods. If the car has any real breathing mods (K&N or RMB don't really qualify) then invest in Sharktuning. Sharktuner again is the weapon of choice if you want to move to more modern injectors with better spray pattern and flow characteristics.
These are my personal experiences and opinions. Others may have different experiences and opinions to share.

Have had so many customers come in with running issues from knocking (pinging you can actually hear) to running way too rich. Pop the LH/EZK out and see these and just shake my head, put the stock chips or ST EPROMS in and problem solved. One customer swore that he traveled across Arizona at 200mph after installing these and they were so damn great. Problem was his car ran like ****.
Adding fuel to an already rich running car, then tossing extra timing in and what do you have? A car that isn't going to perform. Get a car that is running 20 year old knock sensors and hall sensor that have failed and still running these chips and you have more issues.
Auto Authority made a killing on these when they introduced them. At about $1000.00 a set.

They retired with my “investment” dollars from almost 20 years ago now. Happens. Not every investment is the “sure thing” that promoters state. We did some back-to-back dyno results at a early Devek Days event, Phil Tong’s GT was the test platform.

I have a good friend with a 2004 911 Carrera S 6 spd with the 3.6L engine. Prior to installing the Porken Chips he could always pull away from me. After the install, both EZ & LH with only the Brown Wire enabled, the Carrera S can't pull away from me anymore. I still can't pull away from that Carrera S but it frustrates my friend to no end that my 33 year old car now keeps up with his. Love it!!
