How to remove rear console lid?
An unfortunate incident with battery acid has destroyed the rear console lid and I'm trying to remove it to send off to Rob Budd to recover. I have the box removed and all the trim screws, but it appears the hinges are molded into the plastic and don't remove. I am thinking the way to remove the lid is to slide the hinge pin inward. Is this correct? Those pins are in there pretty firmly. Is there a special tool anyone has used to do this?

It's been a few years since I recovered mine so don't remember the details, but I was thinking that I actually tapped them out with a small punch to the outside. was thinking that there is just enough room to get them past the center section of the hinge to release the lid, then tapped them the rest of the way out so I could reinstall them from the center. You may want to take a quick measurement of the pin length and the gap between the hinge section and flange on the lid to see if the pin will fit between them.

I don't have a picture, but there are a series of small screws that you take out along the underside edge, and it just pops off. I think 4 or 5 screws per side. Little phillips head screws. Very easy once you see it. I have done it with mine.

Undo the screws, but then you have to tap out the pins at the rear of the console lid, otherwise you can break the plastic frame attached to the lid. Ask me how I know. !!!

Thanks guys. I have the whole box removed from the car, and I've got those 14 little philips screws out, but the lid is still attached to the box at the hinge. I'll just box it all up and send it to Rob that way. I can't get at a good angle with a punch to drive those hinge pins out and I'd rather not screw up the box. I was just trying to make it easier to ship. Thanks for the input.

Hmm, there must be a difference with the later cars. Mine, a 78, just came off after taking out those 10 or 12 (or 14) little screws. I'll look tonight again to refresh my memory.

Thanks Ed. But no worries. It's all boxed up and UPS is already taking it to Rob for delivery on Friday. Hoping to get it back in time for Petit Le Mans in mid-October.

Petza914. Yes, I'm there every year in a bronzit (aka gold) 928 or a midnight blue 996 C4. I typically like to take the 928 for that trip. We are also parked in PorschePlatz. We'll be a group of about 12 guys all dressed in Hesketh Racing shirts. We all drive up from Gainesville FL. I'll keep an eye out for you.

I looked at mine last night. All I needed to do to remove the lid was remove those 14 screws, separate the covered part from the "frame" piece, and pull through on the lock. The top piece, which is what gets recovered, comes right off so that it can be repaired. I know yours is shipped, but this is FYI for others following along.

Thanks Ed. Maybe mine was just stuck on from being on there for 33 years. It was only $8 to ship the whole box to Rob at Classic 9. So not a big deal if anyone else has that issue.
