Paul - Are you sure it's the foltage reg and not just the brushes in it? Take it to a alternator shop and have them test it. I had new brushes installed for around $15 and all was fine.

Paul,
I hope it's no more than the brushes and certainly no more than the regulator.
I have a used, read that, smoked alternator I bought off Jim Moorehouse a whlie back -took it to the Auto Zone for test prior to install and zippy-pinhead turned it into an arc welder, diodes/regulator/field core/armature- just not sure what fried. Pay the freight and its yours
If you switch alts you 'MAY' or maynot have to change pulleys, flat key, if you do there is yet a third type -Paris Rhone, Bosche, M-----? One of them has a pulley shaft of a different diameter, and I'm not sure the regulators are interchangeable. I differ with others here but I have never had a 928 alt with the 'button/round' type regulator last very long... go with a rectangular regulator if at all possible.
I've been thru the hoops on alts though this last one has lasted since april or march ? I believe the damage to the alts comes from run down battery situations, since I trickle charge all the time , now I haven't had a problem.
I think the the super draw for recharge at start-up is overheating the rebuilt alt diodes and either smoking the low end diode or heating it to the point the solder lets go and away goes the diode, particularly noticeable on the Paris Rhones' though others say they have gotton good service from their units. My info is anecdotal.

Paul,
If you can follow Drew's lead, ~$100 exg/install sounds great!
When my Paris Rhone/Marchal... crapped out, I didn't have that ($) option . Ended up replacing a large power diode and the regulator - with a 'generic' for ~$25 (the orriginal Marchal is ~$75). Mechanically, the alt. is well built: nearly four years later, it's still pumping out ~100 amps @13.9v (+0.5v better than oem).
As the alt. has to come out anyway, do (as John mentiones) pull the regulator/brush holder - and check the brushes: to go beyond this, it's a soldering gun and DVM to check diodes &field continuity, or someplace w. a test bench.

Hmmm would AutoZone have the parts in-store to replace the brushes or whatever you guys are talking about?

I may do that this weekend if they could fix it in a day or 2... I have to have the car as it's my only mode of transportation currently.

(my alternator sleeps until i rev it up high... then it starts to charge... then the needle starts bouncing between 12 and 14...)

I checked with AutoZone last time and they did not have the brushes nor a generic regulator that fits the 928. Call a few local alternator repair shops around your area, and ask them if they are willing to sell you the regulator only. Don't let them talk you, it sounds like your regulator is bad. Anyone?
