'91 S4 being "sorted".
I do not usually end up with cars to either take apart or restore for sale.
Recently, I tripped over a couple of exceptions...and ended up with a 91 S4 with 160,000 miles on it, from a client. White with tan. The absolute best of all the S4 models with the "late" airbag system and upgraded PSD clutches.
I was going to take it apart and use the pieces, but the condition made me hesitate. The interior had a bad driver's seat upper bolster. The rest of the interior....nothing short of magnificent. The passenger seat looked like no one had ever sat in it....nary a crack in the dash or pod. Virtually perfect carpet.
The paint appears to be original on everything but the front fenders and front bumper. I've yet to find a ding.
Mechanically....very "fixable".
160,000 easy miles...no thrust bearing damage. (I added an extra clamp to make sure it stays that way.)
New water pump, recoated gears, new timing belt...everything redone in the front of the engine. New caps, rotors, etc.
Complete intake system redo, with new hoses, electrical pieces. Powder coated intake and valve covers. Replaced the rubber oil galley plugs with the new aluminum plugs, replaced the worn pads on the tensioners.
New cooling fans...because I don't want them to fail, down the road. New coolant reservior, hoses, etc.
New factory motor mounts, pan gaskets repaired and rod bearings checked. New factory oil pick-up seal ring, of course.
Complete service on the A/C system, including replacing all the leaking pods inside.
Completely gone through the front susoension. The shocks were new on all 4 corners. Replaced the worn lower control arms on the front.
In tank fuel pump replaced. New Factory and GB fuel lines.
Factory undertrays with ducts, my "skid plate" protectors...turn key car.
The list goes on and on...but you get the idea...I'm trying to build someone a completely sorted "Greg Brown" quality car that needs nothing.
I won't know exactly the final price, until I sit down and add it up, but I'm thinking that this car will be ~35K-40K all done. Very reasonable price for a completely sorted car, in my world.
This will be a great car for someone looking for a great, super reliable, great looking, no excuse driver!
I'lll get some pictures, next week, when I get back in town.

Hmmmm.......... this sounds interesting..... I recall back in 2004 when a certain red 88S4 was rebuilt to high standards and sold (to me).......
And I'm parking Sean's 87 S4 5 speed at my place for a bit while getting some work done on it..... I wonder if the wife won't notice two 928's

That car is going to be fantastic.
If I didn't own an 89 the 91 would have been my favorite year to have bought. It is essentially a GTS with fewer engine issues.
Someone is going to end up with a fantastic driver.

Back from the detail shop. The front bumper is still off. I found three tiny little "dings" on the passenger door and the right rear 1/4 panel, after detailing, that I will have to have removed.
Crazy nice car!

Truthfully, this car is an experiment.....more of a "market research" project.
I've got a pretty good idea of what is happening in the 928 world, with prices on cars that have been sold. And I'm doing a bunch of restoration work on client's cars. I'm also doing a tremendous amount of work on cars that people either already own or have just bought and they want them to be made mechanically reliable....perfect as they can get. I know what this costs....
I want to know if there is a market for a completely sorted, really nice 928. Not a concours car or a garage find with 5000 miles on it, but a really, really nice car to start with, that has had my magic done to it.
I originally was planning on doing this car and tossing it up on BAT....to see what the market was really like and see if there was a market for this level of a 928.
I'm just "flashing" this past y'all to see what you guys think. Comments....negative and positive are welcome.

Well Stan's car was a good benchmark for a sale by a dean of the 928 community of a car that was not a concours queen but a great driver, well sorted. I was surprised it did not go for more, as I think the buyer got a real bargain. Nevertheless, yours may have a better paint job and cosmetic finish, which will help immensely. Also, yours is a more powerful, later model, and the S4's have been pretty strong on BaT. I'll go out on a limb and say mid to high 20's for yours, as 160K on the clock will hurt the high end.
