carbon fiber hood
it seems i caught the carbon fiber fever. My dash and pod is almost done and now im sending my hood out. Its going to be like the invader style on the link below. I went with this style because of my intake set up. Im also getting rid of all mounting hardware and going with a fastener style. Hes building a 1 and only for a good price on a custom hood. Hes estimating about 3lbs when its done and cleared. If i wanted stock hoods out of carbon fiber he thinks he can do it for $1000 each and i know a few people were asking me about the hatch. Give him a call to discuss it, he just needs one to get the mold.(213)746-0118 John

lou,
way to go! i didnt realise just how much weight is in the stock interior trim untill i had to take the door cards out, they are heavy. a carbon-fibre interior is the way to go.

I have a carbon fiber hood for the wide body project car ......it weighs about the same as the aluminium hood because it was made in a hand layup process using fiberglass resin . Unless you are working with preimpregnated carbon fiber cloth material which must be refrigerated or it goes off ..... the typical "carbon fiber hood " is a fiberglass hood with some carbon fiber materials on one side for LOOKS . The real stuff is pre preg , vacuum bagged to remove excess resin AND baked in an oven (autoclave) . Being fiberglass resin (or polyester which is cheaper) if left unpainted un protected it quickly can get sun damaged .

VK,
I will post pics of the dash and pod when i get it back. As of today Monday the mold was just finished.
Drew,
HaHa!!
Jay,
as for the carbon fiber door panels they can be done and i already discussed it with them. I also discussed the complete door itself finished to hold all hardware.
Shrkbit,
i saw the price the guy was charging for s/h on ebay. Heres a little info i found out about those designer hoods and like Jim was saying. Its a layered process with the design being made of fiberglass and sandwiched with carbon fiber so its not a true carbon hood. I already discussed this with my guy and told him i wanted pure or nothing at all. Thats why theres going to be only 1 made, he said he might design it out of clay first. One more thing this guy also owns a bodyshop too. From my understanding its a pretty big business he has going on

I guess my only question is why?
I understand the 'looks' thing, but other than that, as Jim said, without spending a ton of time/money, there won't be any weight savings, so why spend a 1+K$, to shed maybe 2 pounds at best?
You could do the sunroof (it's been done before, I may do some myself if I get really bored someday) that would save 20+ pounds off the top side of the car.
Just curious.

Greg,
I already replaced the sunroof panel with the carbon fiber filler panel and im currently getting the dash and pod made out of carbon fiber. As for the hood i designed a different intake system so the style for the hood i chose will benefit me.Im not sure if you seen other threads of what was done to the car as for weight savings.
No sunroof equipment
No power seats (fiberglass non adjustables)
No sound deadener
No a/c system
No smog pump system
No mechanical fan (electric)
S4 replica fiberglass bumpers
Cars also a 5 speed

OK...I'm not in favor of a carbon fiber hood on my car.
-First of all, you aren't going to save much weight, as per Jim Bailey. The hood on our cars weighs 18 lbs- if you manage to make a 3 lb hood, then you have saved 15 lbs. At what cost? I suspect that it would be more cost effective to go on a diet and lose 15 lbs or at least clean all the junk out of your car....
[You cannot lay naked on a carbon fiber hood while someone takes pictures of you either~]
Second, I simply don't think I'd care for the appearance. I saw a carbon fiber hood on a late model BMW M3, and it looked totally hot- but then again the hood on that car stretches nearly all the way across. Since we have wide fenders and a narrow hood, I think it would look too contrived- that is, it would look like someone just had to have some carbon fiber, as opposed to that BMW's more honest "hardcore racer" look.
NOW....every time I open my hatch I marvel at just how heavy that part feels. A fantastic development would be a lightweight all carbon fiber hatch....and I'd even consider a lexan rear window.
My sunroof has been a headache from day one. You should see the scratches that I have.....nasty! I'm thinking about pulling ALL the guts out of the mechanism, and getting a carbon fiber plug to fill the gap. At Sharks In The Mountains, there was a red 928 with numbers on the doors that had one of these, and the guy who owned it was selling these plugs. I'd like to contact him....if anyone here knows who this was, let me know please!

Lou,
Sounds like you're on the right track for shaving some weight off the car.
Didn't know you needed the hood for a custom intake, using fiber can be useful in those apps, it's sometimes easier than metalwork, esp. on aluminum.
BTW- Please don't sell one to Normy. He seems like a good guy and all, but I really don't want to see any pictures of him naked on his new hood.
