Default Camshaft sensor versus crankshaft sensor

what is the difference between the camshaft sensor and the crankshaft sensor?

i see lots of references to the crankshaft sensor but I can’t find any on the camshaft sensor. where is the camshaft sensor anyway?

Presumably you are referring the models equipped with LH/EZ and knock sensors- the crankshaft sensor tells the brains how fast the engine is rotating at and where the crank is [when the pulse fires] the camshaft sensor enables the brains to resolve which firing cycle the crank is on when a knock event takes place thus the EZ knows which cylinder to retard. This setup is what is found on the S4, GT and GTS model variants. As I understand the earlier 32V variants do not have knock control thus the timing is more conservative.

The camshaft sensor [aka the Hal Trigger] is located over the 1/4 exhaust cam just behind the cam sprocket

The main difference is that the car will run without the Hall Sensor (Cam Shaft) but it definitely won't run without the Crank Position Sensor

yes, but if you have a faulty hall sensor, you will be robbed of some HP and torque. bad hall sensor will retard timing. AMHIK

The crankshaft sensor on the 928 is something I replaced a few weeks ago as a preventative measure while I have the engine out. Mine was working fine before I pulled the engine but seized solid in its mounting hole and I could not remove it without breaking it and levering it out from the inside so I replaced it and used anti seize when refitting as a future failure would have required the engine to come out again!
