Default Need help in identifying source of this oil leak

OK, I noticed a pool of oil in the valley between the valve covers about a year ago. Mopped it up and was hoping maybe some oil had spilled down there when someone did an oil change. Noticed a pool of oil again. Have also noticed that recently I was smelling exhaust like fumes in the cabin but not think it is the oil burning up. The pool of oil is right under the thermostat. I've tried to highlight the general area with the attached pics. Interestingly, the oil level has not gone down much at all if any.

Any ideas?

I had this exact issue; oil pooling in the valley, and an exhaust smell in the cabin. my plastic oil filler tube had a crack
in it, and the breather hose from the forward passenger cam cover was split at the oil filler nipple.

I replaced the plastic oil filler tube with a metal one, installed a greg brown baffle, and replaced the split hose.

since the repair, no more oil in the valley, and no more smell.

Ok thanks for the help. Hopefully it won’t be too difficult to fix. I’ll give this a shot soon.

I had something very similar with mine, Ended up to be the breather hose from the oil filler neck to the valve cover.

I think you need to get to the oil filler tube first, to determine, what exactly is causing the leak. not that big of a deal, but you need to remove
the water bridge to get to the oil filler. I would first suggest you try to remove the driver side rear most allen head bolt for the water bridge. check out
Dwayne's intake removal tips, or search for removing the water bridge; that bolt is a bit difficult to get to with a straight long allen wrench. I got lucky,
and used a torx bit. on install, I replaced that bolt with a 12.8 hardened one, that made tightening and torqueing easy. if you can't get that bolt out,
you will need to remove the intake, I order to get to the oil filler.

also, I found it easier to remove the water bridge bolts, and then rocking the housing to gain access to the 2 bolts for the oil filler. loosening the oil filler
made it easier to remove the water bridge.

Great tips. I assume removal of the water bridge means draining the coolant also?

yes. you will be removing the upper and lower radiator hoses to remove the water bridge. read this write up:

You probably don't want to hear this but I had to remove the intake to be able to fix that problem because on mine a 91 the right bolt holding down the oil filler was inaccessible and so since you have to go through all that you should do an intake refresh while you are in there. I'm sure you'll find it really needs it once you get in there. Check with Roger at 928srus to get all of the parts you'll need.

How long does this repair last using the OEM standard parts and no mods/upgrades? If it’s going to last 60K then I’m ok with it but if it’s gonna start leaking again after say 10-20k then the mods would probably be the way to go?

If done according to spec with Porsche parts then probably another 30 years.

I just checked the service history. The previous owner replaced the oil filler gasket 3 times and replaced the actual tube once. So with 170,000 miles on the clock divided by 3 = 57,000 miles. And who knows how long it was actually leaking before he replaced the gasket. So according to the math looks like these need to be replaced every 50,000 miles or so.

seems a bit excessive? I think if you do it properly, you may never have to do it again. as mentioned, I installed greg browns
baffle that I got from roger at 928srus. for my own pleasure, I found a metal neck to replace the plastic one. take a look at this
thread below; search, and you will find a lot of threads like this
