Sunroof rattles
Can someone offer any BTDT experience on getting rid of sunroof rattles. Mine is about to drive me insane. It opens and closes like a champ.
Now I've searched archives and reviewed Nichol's tips... found out about the three felt buttons on the liner panel and put new felt on two of the three that were bare. Are there any other possible culprits? I'm thinking it may be the wind deflector? Are there bushings that should be inspected? How is this floppy metal component secured from vibration when the roof is closed?
Probably wouldn't bother me so much, if the rest of the car wasn't so dang rock solid - rattle and squeak free!
Thanks,
Bill

Mine rattles/squeaks also. I haven't got around to trying to fix it yet but I checked it quickly a while ago and saw a screw missing from the center of it (when the sunroof is open, stick your head in and look in the direction of the rear of the car) that I'm guessing regulates the height when it's closed so it doesn't rub the headliner?. For now, when it gets annoying, I just put the pointy end of a cheap bic pen cap between it and the headliner. Not a good answer but it was driving me up the wall on a trip once and that's all I had handy...it worked like a charm. I have to look for those felt buttons.

Joe,
Here is the Nichols' tip that I followed on the repair:
http://www.nichols.nu/tip501.htm
Fairly easy to get the galvanized steel panel out of the opening by bowing it in. A little trickier to get it back in, but not too bad. When I got it out and saw two of the three "buttons" without felt, I was sure I had found the culprit. Just didn't seem to make much of a difference on mine...
Now where is that BIC pen and wedge of cardboard?

There are three vertically slotted clops welded to that galvanized panel but for you to have removed it I'm sure you noticed.
Assuming all three screws were in place after you reinstalled you might want to look at the left and right side near the forward part of the rails - with the interior panel off, of course-compare both sides and you might find that a screw might be missing.
Again if you had removed the interior panel and the galvanized panel any loose/rattling hardware should have come down with the panel so it's probably an adjustment that's needed to quiet things down.
The only adjustment I can see is with those 3 slotted brackets.
Then again, there are guides attached to the forward ends of the cables -I think- and these may be what 'cams' the wind deflector down as the roof closes -to prevent the roof from plowing into the deflector -another assumption-. As to the deflector there are no bushings that I recall just a couple of riveted pivot points.
P.S. If your motor/transmission cover is off that could be part off the problem, or if any of the three flat spring tensioners has been bent incorrectly/snapped off that could also be a problem.

Thanks for the input John.
I don't see anything else amiss. What I am trying to figure out is what the wind deflector and it's sub-parts "nests" against in the closed position that prevents it from vibrating/rattling. If you jiggle the thing with the sun roof open it is apparent that it could create some noise when vibration occurs.
