Default Alarm / Stereo / Radar detector shop on my route home?

I'm planning to leave New York tomorrow morning and drive:

NY
Phila
Wilmington
Balto
DC
Blue Ridge Parkway :-D
Roanoke
Asheville
Deal's Gap
Chattanooga
Birmingham
Meridian
Jackson
New Orleans
Houston

The PO had an aftermarked radar detector (now nonfunctional) installed in the ashtray door, so there's no cigarette lighter. I need radar detection. I have my V1 with me, but without the lighter I can't plug it in.

Can someone recommend a shop somewhere along my route (preferably in the first few cities) to wire in my V1? They'll need to be familiar with V1 installation because I don't have the stock kit for tapping into power with the V1 cable.

I'll be hitting the road tomorrow (1/16) before noon.

Thanks,
Mark.

I wired my V1 into my dome light. It's not the most elegant installation and you have to remember to turn it off when you get out of the car, but it's an easy install.

I have the exact same install as Ernest. I think it is rather elegant if you mount the power block right where the windshield meets the headliner (all things considered).

I remove my V1 when I leave the car. Years ago I lost 1 window, 1 pair of driving gloves and 1 pair of original Carrera glasses for leaving the temptation in the window. Fortunately, the detector was just an Escort.

So my V1 is always at least in the glove box when not in use.

God, I do love that detector.

Hey, I've been meaning to ask. Do those detectors actually work? Not to hijack the thread, but your comment suggests that it has saved you from the fuzz.
It's funny how driving a truck all these years, the cops are just guys in cars. But in the 928 they are a reason to panic. I'd love to end that. And I'd also love to be able to drive my car. But I'd really really hate to be going 110, and get pegged because I thought I was protected and somehow they got me anyways. I suppose this is a discussion that 's been beat to death here.
I really should start a new thread, but I'm not willing to take my chances yet, with or without a detector. Just curious.

From what I've heard, the detector only alerts you when the cop is targeting you (or somebody nearby you). So basically, it alerts you that you're getting a ticket....

If your final destination is Houston, you will want to take the I-12 bypass around New Orleans. It will save you around 2 hours on your trip.

Cool not quite so simple a bust

V1....don't leave home without it.

First, the V1 alarm does not mean you have been hit or even spotted. It means that somewhere out there is a source of radar and you should take steps immediately to determine where it could be originating. It could be an automatic garage door or security gate at a shopping mall. (IGNORE)
It could be Smokey working his way up through traffic but 2 - 3 minutes behind you and his unit is scattering all over and the V1 has picked it up. (SLOW and WATCH) Sooner or later he'll pass by you and you will be blessing the V1. I know this to be true. Watch the arrows on the V1. It could be Smokey parked on the other side of an overpass you are approaching but again his signal is scattered. (SLOW and LOOK AROUND).
It could be from a low profile vehicle that would otherwise not appear to be Smokey at all. (LOOK AROUND). Of course you should always be looking around anyway, right??

The signal on the V1 will start at less frequent intervals building to more frequency as the source approaches. The arrows will designate which signal (there could be several) is strongest and from what direction. Using your reasoning powers, you can determine the likely location of the source.

At night it is invaluable, particularly in Texas where Smokey parks in the median out of sight of your headlights and waits for you to pass by before pulling out behind you.

If you are in traffic, the beam is not necessarily locked on to you, unless it is almost constant. You still have time to pull the handbrake and drop anchor. Never mind that Smokey knows you are doing that (that's the immediate purpose isn't it?)

You will wonder what was wrong with you before you got a V1 once you have it. No, I don't work for Valentine. Someone once told me driving without a V1 is like playing Russian roulette. Don't leave home without it.
