Default Smog pump disassembly?

Anyone out there have a guide to taking the smog pump apart for re-build/new bearings on an '85 S3? I've got the pump out thanks to instructions posted on SharkSkin's 928 Page (https://members.rennlist.com/sharksk...ck-AirPump.htm). Now I need to get the darn thing apart.

Any pointer's appreciated,

Interesting. This is a slightly fancier version of the smog pumps that I rebuild for the muscle car world. Made by Saginaw and used on Fords and GM cars of the late 60s up through the 90s (on Fords). Parts appear to be the same; in particular the vanes, carbon seals, etc.

I never remove the bearings from the vanes. I soak them in mineral spirits, brush them vigorously with a small version of a bottle brush (sold for cleaning oil galleys and such), blow them dry and then grease them up and re-install. I have a source for new carbons. I am guessing that the front bearing on the Porsche version is retained by a snap ring. On my style, they are fixed with an injected resin that has to be softened with heat to remove without risking breaking the front of the pump housing. The snap ring would be much easier! I always replace the front bearing.

If you get into this and need some parts I may be able to help. There is also a rebuilder in Oregon who I am sure could rebuild this for you properly and with the required new parts. Hart Bros. Don't know the price but they do hundreds of these on a routine basis. They would be my first recommendation rather than doing it yourself. It is sort of a PIA job and some new parts are required to do it properly.

Thanks for the parts offer, I'll let you know if I run into anything. I already have all the bearings I need.

So far getting the pump out of the car has been the hard part. Taking it apart is going pretty smoothly.

It certainly did. I've replaced the two main bearings and I'm starting re-asembly. Piece of cake once I knew how it was supposed to come appart.

Regards,
