You want the shift lever in the 2/3 plane and pointing straight up when in neutral. Deviations by a few hands of degrees from this in one or both of the roll or pitch axis will result in not being able to fully engage a gear or whacking/breaking the plastic surround for the shift boot.

I’ve seen one setup so badly that selecting 1st gear would pop-out the boot surround every time.

A good crowfoot wrench set can be helpful with this task.

Good news - replacing the bush is relativity easy and the use of a come-along pulls the bush over the ball.
