Default New Chin Splitter/Spoiler Project - need a car to digitize

Fellow Rennlisters.

I am interested in making an aftermarket chin splitter for the 928, and I need an unmolested late-model 928 in the North Carolina area to measure and digitize.

My concept is to create two versions; a streetable version that replaces the current Porsche lower chin spoiler, and a more aggressive competition version. We are going to also take a look at designing in the engine belly pan so that the chin splitter and belly pan are all one piece.

The OEM spoiler is currently priced at $974 by Porsche, and they have no stock at this time. Zero.
928-505-071-21-70B COST $731.17 / LIST $974.89 NOT AVAILABLE NO STOCK

I don’t know about yours, but my ’91 has a badly beat-up chin spoiler and I’m not surprised – it lives in a harsh world with lots of curbs and driveway approaches to crack it. I’m thinking that there may be a market for a replacement that also would help bring the looks of the 928 a little more up-to-date.

I have selected Power Stream Industries http://powerstreamindustries.com/products/splitters.cfm to partner with me on making this product, and 928 Motorsports is completely funding the development.

We need no money from anyone at this time.

What I DO NEED however, is a 1987-1995 928 in stock trim and good condition to drive over to Powerstream so it can be measured. The 928 owner who does this for us will receive the street version of the chin splitter at no cost from us, or a $400 credit in our store if he doesn’t want one.

The address is:

Power Stream Industries
605 North Central Ave.
Locust, NC 28097

Here is the typical process:

First visit
Initially we will need car for several hours, ideally a full day. The stock lower chin spoiler will be removed, and the mounting/attachment points for it will be digitally measured by their CCM machine. Then your chin spoiler will be put back up.

Second visit
When the mock-up is ready, we will ask you to bring your car back for a test fitting. We install the mock-up and check for fitment. Time required approx 1-2 hrs

Third visit
Install revised mock up. Time requirement approx 1-2 hours

Please let me know if you are interested in being our fitment model, and tell me about your car and how far you are from Powerstream.

The timeline on this is fairly open, but it would be nice to get this going before the snow flies.

Hi Carl,

Great project!! One quick suggestion, edit your post to say looking for Charlotte NORTH Carolina 928ers. There are a bunch, I will try to remember who has the nicest example for you. If I think of it I will let you know and get contact info for ya..

Keep on fighting the good fight,

Dave

No problem Carl, since Locust, NC is an outskirt of Charlotte (all of which is NASCAR Country), closest guys will be in that area, as well as Rock Hill, SC right across the border.

OH, I know you know this, but in case someone forgets, you need the later spoiler with the cutouts for the Oil Cooler, like the one you pictured on the ground. Most stock original pre-90 will not have those cutouts.

Have a great day,

Dave

928-505-071-20-70B IS NOT AVAILABLE ANY LONGER. That’s 1987-1989.

Sorry for the ALL CAPS. Not shouting at you. That's the way Porsche sent it to me

The above is correct about fitment, what I was meaning to say is if you end up scanning a 928 with the original (no holes) to not forgot to re-create those holes in the new offering.

Cheers,

Dave

Cool project, and good to see NC companies in the mix!
Any chance of this eventually evolving to include pre-S4 spoiler styles?

I knew that question was coming... No plans at this time for the 1978-1986 cars... but you never know.

An important point, Dave. Meaning to me that what I am REALLY hoping to find is a 1990 or newer. Then we can scan it with the factory air passages in place.
