Default Torque Tube Bearings Project

I've avoided TT and TC bearing replacements for 11 years across all my cars, but now have to do it on 86 USA.

Read lots of posts, especially Dwayne epic how-to.

Turning out less complicated than I thought.

Am at re-assembly stage.

Took some slightly different paths.

On reassembly of TC bearings, I've left out the spacer between the bearings.
Mine was worn and squalling as it lost and gained contact with drive shaft.
Was able to find an assembly sequence that omitted it; clip rings actually fully-locate them, so it is together and they are solidly in place.

On TT, Dwayne suggests a way of incremental prying of central drive shaft against a removed bell housing, then using threaded rod as a puller to remove bearing carriers and damper.

I used a 2 X 4 and a sledge hammer to "gently tap" the drive shaft and all innards out.

Perfect so far.

Carriers are entirely re-usable. I think my bearing inserts, see photo, are also. Perhaps these were replaced previously, but so far I see no issue with re-use.

Not as elegant, proper and bullet proof as the Constantine / Black Sea R&D bearing carrier solution, granted, but it should work in my case since the gear is all in good shape.

I guess I need to look at where the shoulders are for the TC bearings, and where the circlips clips go. I have this project in my future, more as a prophylactic/ PM assignment as I contemplate putting a used 2.20 1988 box in to get longer touring legs than the 2.54 1989 box. Cue the torque vs horsepower discussion in 3...2...1...

You OWN all tech discussions if you elect to play, sir. Just stating the facts as I've seen them.

You know I've put the 89 box into 84 to wake it up around town, which it does, but for long drives a fresh earlier ratios box would be better.

I'm going to do this soon along with the tranny sway on my 89 as soon as my other projects and life events allow me the time. I already have the bearings from Roger. Thanks for posting.

I've never seen/removed old bearing carriers that looked that good, most are hard as rocks and have little to no grove depth in the rubber.
Yes, the 2x4 fits perfect in the TT, I use WD-40 in the tube after removing the driveshaft to help the carriers slide out

Looking good,

Dave

Yes, WD 40 here as well. After I tapped the shaft past the first carrier. 2x4 is perfect if you sand the edges a tad.

This is a really strong running 86. I've probably put 500 miles on it in three years. Can't wait to run it again. We live reasonably close to I 68 and I love that road for 928s.
