Question Did my 928 just cough up a lung?

I put in redline gear oil (In the street in the rain) with the help of my trusty 17mm hex wrench but I did not get any improvement in shift smoothness. I think it's because my second gear is destroyed beyond repair and the idea that I will never be able to downshift to second while taking a turn at 60mph is too horrible to imagine.

My magnetic drain plugs were gooped up with enough metal shavings to construct a small metal replica of my car and I found, in horror, a honest-to-god peice of metal stuck on the magnet. I think my higher brain functions shut down to prevent a heart attack because I just stuck it in my pocket and finished refilling the oil.

Now that I think about it, it must be the reason for the grinding shifts into second that I only attempt while going <10mph. In fact, it looks much like a synchro part or something in 928intl's catalog (very nice catalog). So, here's a pic. Please be gentle. I will be jumping off the roof if this means I need a tranny rebuild that is too difficult for me to do on my own or too pricey in parts.

Don't worry about that part. It means that it is likely that your gear oil has never been changed before.

Seriously, that part - if I recall correctly - is a retaining clip for the 'lid' of the transaxle casing. Its common for it to come out with the gear oil.

Drew,
You did not say if you used regular Red Line or Red Line NS. If it was not NS, then no improvement would be what you'd expect. The NS (non slippery) will help synchros work better. You will have to mix regular Red Line and NS if you have a LSD diff.

Louie, this NS is suppost to help the syncros work better?

Would there be any problems in putting it in a regular open def. car?

Is it soemthing you mix into the oil, or is it soemthing that you have to buy as a fluid?

My 1st and 2nd grear syncro could use some help, and the 3rd could be a touch better. Thinking maybe this is something i could do till I get the guts to rebuild it.

Drew,
You can read about Redline NS on their web site.

http://www.redlineoil.com/whyredline.htm

Go about 3/4 down the page and click on Gear Oil. Then go about 2/3 down that page and NS has a short explanation.

A short summary is that regular Redline gear oil is too slippery for worn synchros to work well. The Redline NS has a friction modifier that allows synchros to do their synchroing better. I used NS 100% in my GT which had worn synchros a it helped immensely. The PSD diff was compatible with the NS. I understand that if you have a clutch pack type LSD, then you may have to mix Redline NS with regular Redline gear oil in some ratio to achieve a of compromise between having better synchro operation and a smooth engaging LSD. Too much NS and the LSD will be grabby.

Hope that helps

Does anyone have photos of the fill and drain plugs on transmission? I need to change my gear lube and I didn't spot the fill plug. It must be tucked up in there. I was thinking about getting some of that Redline NS everyone is talking about for my 26 year old synchros Also, how much oil are you supposed to put in?

BTW what is a "grabby" lsd? Are you saying you'll get tire squeel taking corners, turning, etc?

Oh, and I'm getting a nice clicking sound coming from the tranny when I'm in 1st gear. I'm hoping whenever I drain the oil, and something comes out, it doesn't look important

thanks for the info on NS. I think I will switch to NS and think of my regular redline fill as a prolonged flush which I should have done in the first place. Does it work like that or do I need a real flushing solution?

Chris - The drain plug is on the back of the tranny. You crouch down and look right up the car's butt dead center and its right there. The fill plug is right above it and the other drain plug is on the direct opposite side of the tranny.

Some quick advice....remove the fill plug first, then remove the drain plugs. It has been mentioned before on this board that after removing the drain plug and draining all the gear oil, the fill plug refused to come out. The rear cover may then have to be removed to get the fill plug out without any damage. Just a reminder.

Rich.

Redline NS made a big improvement on my car.
(no LSD)
Removed most of the grinding shifting to 2:nd.
(completely if i'm not in a hurry)
I think it should be 4 bottles, maybe someone can confirm.

it was probably around 4 bottles for my car but I went through 4.5 by spilling and generally screwing up. I'd get 5 unless you want to walk to wherever you buy the stuff because you spilled 1/3 of a quart in the process of filling.

Drew the metal is from the reverse lock out spring which is attached to the top cover of the trans 1982 > it prevented racking across reverse as you shift from 1 st to 2nd ...... It was over worked and fell down into the transmission You are fortunate that it did not get into one of the gear sets because a chunk of spring steel that small can and does take out gear sets !!
