Default Oil Pressure Help Please

Hi Guys,

After a long 18 months of stripping the car and doing various things I've come time to actually turn the old girl over. I filled the oil filter with oil, put 7 liters in the sump and not sure if I'm getting oil pickup. I removed one of the oil cooler hoses from the radiator and there's no oil in there at all. Is there a way to work out if oil pickup is occurring?

Cheers
Scott

Bit more info on what you have tried would be useful. Which hose did you pull? Top radiator connection is delivery from the pump. How much turning over has the engine done? After 18mos stationary it might take a while to go through? On further reading, oil only goes to the cooler when the temp exceeds a certain figure, and only a proportion bypasses the filter, so I dont think lack of oil in the hose is relevant.
Are you seeing any pressure register on the gauge? Thats the real question.

pull the plugs and spin the engine over with the starter.,
with a hose disconnected oil will quickly dump out when it starts flowing.
you can try back filling the oil cooler line ,
fill it then turn the engine back wards this will put oil into the line then try cranking it in the normal direction

JP has pretty much nailed it on the head for you.

After a long shutdown like you have experienced I would probably put a teaspoon of engine oil on each piston crown, disconnect the fuel pump and ignition, then crank the motor over until I see oil pressure build on the pressure gauge.. Oil will not flow through the oil cooler circuit until the valve thermostatic valve opens at whatever temperature it is rated for. If the oil pressure gauge is working correctly it should take no more than a few seconds of cranking to see pressure build on the gauge especially if you have filled the oil filter preemptively- a good measure for sure but not convinced it should be considered absolutely necessary.

Another little trick is to spin the oil pump with a drill if one has the timing belt off just to prime the engine when cold and get some oil into galleries- I dare say there will be other little gems as well.
