Quiet tires for a 87' 928 s4 ?

No damage or significant handling issues.
I actually had one 8" rim, with four 225/50s. I never noticed any handling issues.
Many suggest road force balancing to get the best install and least chance for shaking or vibration.

I personally have never done the road force balancing and have experienced nothing other than very smooth, vibration-free ride at all speeds, including super illegal. I take it to a shop that has a good reputation and does German cars of all vintages. Don't think that last bit matters but take it to a shop that has a solid rep, use good wheels and tires, and a proper balance will be all you need.
Be careful about the stock size tires, what you see available online is often a lie. There are only a few makes availabile in the 245 45 size. The others are not yet available in the US or are backordered with no estimated production date.

RF balancing solved some issues with my new tires...could NOT get them to balance.
One tire showed a +50lb balance issue this way...and umounting, and remounting the tire got rid of some of it...I need to have BigO replace it outright to be fully smooth.

based on this extremely helpful discussion instigated by Speedtoys it seems like the Conti Extreme contact sport is the way to go. I have them installed on thursday and then go from there on the Dynamat-everywhere project.

...and..dynamat. Be aware that most people use it wrong. Its a damper...you actually need _very little_, not the 50lbs of it you see in cars on the Stupidwebs.
Can do a lot with rockwool and cavity managegment around/behind wheels from the outside.

I picked up some of the acoustic material recommended for horizontal surfaces above. The full on super lamination if the entire car interior is not in the cards for me but I am gonna lay some stuff down under the carpet in the trunk. How do you access the space above the wheels, is a lift required for this? It’s been recommended to go at here from the other direction, the speaker side...
juat lookingfor some more specifcs on rickwool/ cavity management.
(also just looked at This pdf of door panel removal and I can safely say I won’t ever do that .

I looked up in there and can see a removable panel. Just take that off and jam stuff in the cavity, is that the idea? Have you done this? any tips?

Yeah, I would leave that alone if you are not 100% confident in what you are doing, it's not worth it. I have owned over 20 928s for over 20+ years and never felt the urge to use that stuff. Just enjoy the new rubber, crank up the stereo a little it that helps, or even better add an RMB and listen to the real music instead. :-) I guarantee with in a week or so something more important than a little tire noise will pop up in your life and you will forget about it.
Cheers,
Dave

I might look into adding a little something from the wheel well side and replacing the old padding under the hatch carpet and floor mats. But I won't be removing any interior body panels. I really love this car and some small tweaks for comfort are great but I don't want to go crazy. Unfortunately the one thing I do need to do is replace the chintzy cd player someone installed.
I bought a refurb blaupunkt tape deck on ebay, I might make an attempt to switch that out on my own. If I'm gonna drown out road noise I feel I must do it as the designers intended.
