For the money, conti extreme contact sports are the best with better grip in the rain than the new Michelin pilot sports 4s even as the Michelin is still the ultimate best overall. On tire rack, conti are quieter than Michelin’s per user reviews.

i have both in various cars, on a dd, I can’t justify the 30% more in price for Michelin’s that may only be 5% better in ultimate grip.

I got Consumer Reports as a Christmas gift so just throwing this out there:

Ultra High Performance All Season: #1 Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3+, #2 Pirelli P Zero All Season Plus, #3 Continental Extreme Contact DWS06 and #4 BF Goodrich COMP-2 A/S

Ultra High Performance Summer Tire: #1 Michelin Pilot Super Sport, #2 Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3 ("quite ride..."), #3 Nokian ZLine ("quietness..."), #4 Yokohama ADVAN Sport V105, and #5 Pirelli P Zero.

Personally, I wouldn't recommend P Zero summer tires. I have them on my Hellcat and they suck. Good for burnouts but noisy and suck at hooking up.

I know that I am in the vast minority but I never really liked how the Michelin Pilots felt and gripped. My car spends more time in the garage than out so they had very few miles on them last year when I swapped them out due to age. I was considering the Continental ExtremeContact Sport but ended up going with the Firestone Firehawk Indy 500 (rebranded Bridgestone RE003). So far, the Indy's are awesome. Great ride, excellent grip and tough to beat their performance/price ratio.

Rather than start another thread I figured the subject of this one was close enough. On my 90 S4 I have the 17" x 9.5" OEM Cup Race Wheels. Not as many tire choices in 17"s nowadays. On the front I have 255/45ZR17 Bridgestone Potenza S-02 Pole Positions and the rear is 275/40ZR17 Michelin Pilot Sports. I'm
thinking of keeping 275/40ZR17 on the rear and going to 255/40ZR17 on the front rather than 45's due to a little rubbing at low speed when fully turned, I'd probably drop the rears to 35's but there aren't any. My choices appear to be Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 or Continental Extreme Contact Sport, the Michelins are Y rated while the Continentals are W rated. The Michelins are about twice the price of the Continentals at Tire Rack, are they worth it? I noticed some vibration at 80 mph last summer and realized my fronts are 20 years old and the rears are 15 years old. I don't think I'll drive it again until I'm on my way to get the tires replaced. ;-)

Does quiet mean regular driving down the road noise, or squealing when you peal out noise?

Love the Michelin AS3+ (245-35-18, 265/35-18). Loved the Bridgestone RE-11 (225/50-16, 245/45-16). Both quiet and great grip.

@supercedar: I have run-flat Blizzaks on my minivan year round and they are fantastic tires. They actually wear less than the Dunlop and Bridgestone Turanzas that preceded them and are much stickier - that AWD minivan is the most surefooted vehicle I've ever driven in rain or snow, period. However, the tires are Q-rated (99 mph top speed). I assume the 928 shoes have a slightly higher tolerance. Are they really available in those wacky S4 sizes with high speed ratings?

I had to mount the 18" wheels for the Blizzaks. Not available for the 16" S4 wheels. The manager at a tire store recommended these because he puts them on his wifes camaro so should meet the speed ratings. This tire shop Les Schab doesn't even sell these tires. They are awesome on the ice with the 928. I have decided to run them year round.

I use dws on Audi Q7 and 928 and 996 C4S. Great for year round and if you get the non DWS it’s a summer only tire. What are your seasonal driving plans?

Commute and cruising, no track days, few if any twisty highway runs...that even on snow tires I coiudn't manage if I had to.

Goal is as cruise quiet as i can get it, with only moderate perf tradeoff.

The kinda fun part about that is that there is a "D" a "W" and an "S" in the tread. Once they get worn to the point that they aren't any good in snow, the "S" disappears. When they wear to the point they shouldn't be driven on wet surfaces, the "W" disappears (supposedly). No clue if the "D" goes away or not.

I had a set of DWS on my Cayenne when I got it. They were pretty worn, and by the end of the first summer, were due to be replaced. The "S" was gone on 3 of them., and almost gone on the 4th.
