Default Power antenna

on my 82, does anyone know what color wires are behind the dash for the antenna power, ground, and trigger, AND, do they normally run on the driver or the passenger side of the tunnel?

thanks!

There is only one wire that runs up behind the dash for the antenna.

It is the smaller gauge WHITE wire. The rest get power and ground from local connections to the harness.

I am assuming that is the trigger? Hmmm, since all my original radio wires are disconnected/ gone....I wonder if my antenna has juice?

Did you look at the antenna itself? I got up into mine and what wasn't rusted shut was rotted away. A million volts wouldn't have raised that thing.

The antenna always has power and ground. Contacts inside of the original either cut or reverse power to the motor.

The aftermarket ones use an external relay to do the same thing.

So if your wires are just gone you can tap into the battery directly and use a nearby ground point.

I got her up on the lift this evening, pulled the wheel, and removed the wheel well cover, the antenna looks amazingly nice. It has a barrel connector on the wires. When I reinstalled the console, I took out all the butchered up wiring, and installed a hidden under dash antennae. It gets me 2 whole radio stations...ie: it sucks. I decided that I want to use the factory antenna, and was about to order a replacement el cheapo, but the original looks so nice, I am hoping I can just hook up the signal wire and see if it works.

My antenna I though looked nice but it turned out the plastic gear inside had some cracks part way through causing it to go out of alignment with the worm gear inside and jam.

I replaced it with an el cheapo after market and it works just fine while the original sits in pieces in a box.

my 79 has an original metal Hirschman antenna. I found them easy to service with lots of parts availability. That antenna was used across many European makes and models so parts and spares do not seem to be an issue. A replacement mast was all mine needed to get back in the game. Worth a shot for sure

Thanks guy. It is indeed a hirschman unit. I’ll pull it in the morning and see if I can bench test it. Can’t find the trigger wire in the car. Might just run new wires for it altogether, as I have a trigger in the rear for the amp/sub anyhow.
