Default Ideas on Bluetooth mic...

Ok all I need some opinions...

my new radio for the ‘83 has Bluetooth and of course will run the phone for calls.

it has a wired microphone (see below)

i am am trying to figure out where to mount it. I have the interior out of the car, so it can pretty much go anywhere and I can hide the wire.

i have made a new headliner, so I am not opposed to cutting a hole and poking the end through the headliner.

Mic (bare)

Mic with visor clip attached to it.

thoughts?

I have a flatter one that I stuck in the hole where the gauges are behind the steering wheel. It should be in a close spot to your face for best results.

Putting in on a visor or on the A pillar trim are both great spots.

Default Perfect spot?

All -

Thanks for the insight and thoughts. I may have found a perfect spot. In the console to the left of the air vent. See my thoughts below.

The mic looks like it would fit just about perfectly in this area.

The little rectangle cut out of the plastic is filled with foam. If I cut the whole slightly small, I believe the foam would hug the mic and keep it from moving at all.

Would look something like this on the front. With the front of the mic sitting just proud of the surface of the console it would have an almost factory look to it, opposite the inside air temp sensor location.

That would be a really nice location, esthetically and for picking up voice. Can you test it for possible HVAC blower noise or whistling air before you drill?

I think that is actually a poor location - wind noise from the vent, AND when sat in the drivers seat - you cant see that point (it's not not even close) due to the instrument pod being in the way. I think you need a location that is closer to you and more directly in front of you, with a direct path from your mouth to the microphone. 928s are already noisy compared to modern cars - you need to go all out with noise reduction to make this sound decent.

Keep looking - here is a different idea: right in front of you, unobstructed, away from wind noise - mostly hidden (doesn't obstruct gauges - slight incursion into warning indicator territory but certainly not enough to make them difficult to read).

BTW - mounting on the right side makes it more stealthy - passenger can't see it at all - but also less functional for picking up sound from the passenger seat. So a trade off of stealth Vs general function. Either would work fine functionally from a driver only perspective.

Also keep in mind that the ribbing around the mic has holes (look closely) and are part of the mic pickup, so a flush-mount or almost-flush-mount will block those holes limiting the capabilities of the mic. I tried this once and people on the other end said it sounded like I was muffled, like talking through a pillow. Pulled the mic out of the flush mount location and all was good. Lesson learned, the entire mic needs to be exposed to work properly, not just the end of it. Mine ended up in the pod, similar to Alan's and it worked great.

+1

Those holes are also part of the noise cancelling feature. I flush mounted one on my 951 and it sounded terrible. The whole mic needs to be exposed.

Good points thanks all - will try to do some experimenting once everything is back together to find optimal placement.

Mine is hidden away atop the A pillar. Can't see it if your not looking and it works great. 928's are a relatively small cabin anyway..so.
