Darn car will not go into gear.
Hi All,
I am posting this early hoping to have some ideas when I get home.
Problem! A few times I would go to put the car into a gear (Auto) and nothing. Try it a few times and finally it would go, usually when pushing the button down hard or doing it slow. Today it would not go into gear no matter what I did. Played with it almost a half hour and nothing. So there you have it. A pic with a reply would be extremely helpful. Thanks in advance for any help.

The likely spot to look would be the shift cable.
Either the shift cable has broke on one of the retainer ends, or someplace in the length of the cable.
From the tranny side, disconnect it and see if there is some free play, then start working forward.

If you jack up the car and look at the transmission (drivers side) have someone move the shift lever see if it is moving the small arm lever sticking out of the transmission ....OR try putting the shift indicator in 2 or D and try starting the car if it cranks and starts then the shift cable is NOT moving the lever on the transmission ....if it does not crank then the lever is moving and the neutral safety switch is preventing the engine from cranking . The most likely situation is a internal transmission problem but if you are looking under the car check the fluid level ....running warm not in gear ....

Jserio - Does the shift handle move with total ease?.
Last year at the track, my S2 had it's shifter cable pop off (tranny), I was stuck in drive, so I had to call it a day and go home.
Good Luck.

Well I just got home and went into the garage and did a preliminary test. THe car does not attempt to start with the selector in D or 2. I will start in N and P. It is 8pm and now I have to get my fat *** under the car. Almost every 3rd day I regret buying the car. The 2 days in between have been fun so far.

I think I'm screwed sports fans. I got the car to operating temp. Managed to get it somewhat level with two stands and a floor jack. I had it running and in neutral so I checked the fluid and it seemed full but just like in aviation when checking a fuel tank I took off the cap and went to put my finger in the resevoir and the fuid is at the top of the cap opening. I had my finger in the tank maybe a mm and fluid staring to go over the lip and drip on the floor. Now I have a few questions.
1) The car has been running/driving great since I got it. I only had one shifting incident that appeared minor and an isolated instance. I have not put any fluid in the car since I have owned it. Does anyone think that (what appears to be) an over fill finally did some damage?
2) Would draining some fluid help? I was planning on changing the filter anyway.
We will continue with the questions after I get some feedback on this.

Well Jon (a fellow rennlister) and I underwent the removal of the transmission today. Not nearly as tough as I thought. Jon was incredible help. Here's to you Jon . We are looking forward to the install. While the suspension is down I going to change the springs and shocks. Might as well gat that the well out of the way. All is left is the 6 TT bolts and its done. Oh and BTW. In the WSM when is says remove the battery is step 1. Waste of time. Just disconnect it. If you have the removable batt tray it talks about then do it. This was FYI.
