Tracking. I'm a Field Artillery Warrant from PAARNG. I'm at Ft Sill right now for WOAC, trying to get the box checked so I can pick up CW3 (and boost that retirement check)!

Sorry I can't help you with the thermostat; I also have an '82, but that's one of the things that works. If nobody gives you a good answer in this thread, start a new one titled 'Help with my thermostat' or something. People might not realize this is anything more than a 'Welcome aboard' thread.

ChiefWarrantOff, check out this snip of a page from PET for 78-82 928's:

The thermostat and front seal are circled in red. No rear seal shown.

Re: Thermostat rear seal

My car is an '86.5, so that bit about pre-'83 is news to me. Note: If you get your parts from one of the major suppliers here (I use 928International and 928sRUs for almost everything) they will generally know exactly what you need based on year/model and what you're trying to do. That's one of the advantages of using a model-specific parts supplier. They've even provided solutions to parts that are NLA or prohibitively expensive.

Driver side Radiator Hose..Neck

Water Bridge Thermostat

Passenger side Radiator Hose..Neck
Received my thermostat yesterday, and before I install it, I did some general IR gun readings..After 20 mins of driving, temp gauge is right in the middle of the upper hash and red line. after taking some IR readings this is what I found. Please see attached pictures..but on the neck of the thermostat, I am reading around 186 degrees, on the neck of the water hose passenger side radiator, I am reading 183 degrees, and the neck of the water hose driver side radiator I am reading 194 degrees.. am I to assume that my gauge calibration is wrong? sender?? or replace the thermostat for good measure.??
thanks again for the help
Al

185 is the target temp close to the outlet to the radiator, where the top hose connects. Your ir gun needs to be close to get a good reading, with beam flare. I’ve watched folks use that from feet away and get poor results. That little red dot is an aiming aid only.

Dr Bob, so the reading most likely closes in accuracy is the outlet to the radiator where the top hose connects?? and how close should it be away from the reading?? 6 inches or closer??
again thank you
